Sunapee School District proposes $10M to extend building

Hot topic: The Sunapee School District is proposing a $10.6 million bond to renovate and add an extension to the Sunapee Central Elementary School. This is the third time the district has proposed a similar bond; previous $26 million proposals were voted down at Town Meetings in 2019 and 2020.

Budget: Voters will be asked to approve a nearly $8.3 million operating budget for the town, which is a 4.3% increase from the previous year’s budget. If the budget and warrant articles are approved, there would be a 24-cent increase to the town tax rate, or another $60 for the owner of a $250,000 home.

On the school side, voters are asked to approve a $13 million operating budget, which is a 2.8% increase from the current year’s budget. If approved, the budget alone would result in a tax rate increase of 38 cents, or another $95 for the owner of a $250,000 home. If the $10.6 million school renovation bond is approved, it would add an additional 18 cents to the tax rate, or $45, for that same home.

Noteworthy articles: The town is asking voters to approve the use of funds for several infrastructure-related projects, including using $50,000 to make safety improvements to the intersection at Garnet and Main streets.

Contested races: Voters will elect two Selectboard members among Jeremy Hathorn, Josh Trow and John Augustine. They will also vote for three library trustees from a group including Melvyn Rappeport, Nancy Berger, Jane Frawley and James Harrison. On the school side, voters will be asked to choose between Scott Ritzmann and Michael Sisemore for School Board.

When and where: Voting for both the school and town will be held by Australian ballot from 8 a.m. to 7 p.m. on March 9 at Shelburne Gym.
