Sunapee — A 65-year-old Newport man died in a two-car crash in Sunapee on Tuesday morning.

Richard Hart was pronounced dead at the scene following the crash at about 9:17 a.m. on Route 103 near Young Hill Road, according to a news release from the Sunapee Police Department.

The driver of the other vehicle, Richard J. Briand, 79, of Arlington, Mass., was transported by ambulance to New London Hospital and then to Dartmouth-Hitchcock Medical Center, where he is being treated for his injuries, police said.

There were no passengers in either vehicle involved in the crash.

A DHMC spokesman said on Wednesday afternoon that Briand still is being evaluated.

Both drivers were trapped in their vehicles when police arrived and needed to be extricated, Sunapee police Sgt. Neill Cobb said.

Sunapee police are investigating the cause of the crash, which closed Route 103 for about four hours.

Among the factors police are investigating is which direction Hart and Briand were traveling at the time of the crash, Cobb said.
