SPRINGFIELD, Vt. — Springfield Hospital plans to begin contracting with a Maine-based company to provide physicians and other medical staff in its emergency department starting on Tuesday.

BlueWater Emergency Partners, based in Brunswick, Maine, will begin providing a board-certified physician, nurse practitioners and physician assistants to work alongside existing nurses at Springfield Hospital, the hospital said in a news release on Monday.

The Valley News in December reported that BlueWater would replace Chester, Vt.-based Emergency Services of New England, which provided emergency services at Springfield Hospital for 40 years, as part of a money-saving move by Springfield Hospital.

BlueWater CEO Jay Mullen said his company could help with opioid use disorder treatment in emergency settings and also deliver babies in emergency cases. Springfield Hospital recently announced that it is closing its birthing center, though Brattleboro Memorial Hospital will offer some obstetric services in Springfield.
