WILLIAMSTOWN — State Sen. Mark MacDonald is taking a break from the campaign trail after suffering from “a mild stroke” Sunday night, according to a Wednesday news release from his family.

MacDonald, a Democrat from Williamstown, Vt., who represents Thetford, Strafford, Tunbridge, Randolph, Vershire, Chelsea and Corinth, among other towns in Orange County, is currently running for reelection against Brookfield, Vt., Republican John Klar.

He is currently recovering at the University of Vermont Medical Center and will begin physical therapy.

“When he hits all his milestones, Senator MacDonald will resume his campaign for re-election,” the news release said. “Mark is in good spirits as he tackles this unexpected challenge. He and his family expect a speedy recovery.”

MacDonald, who is in his late 70s, has held the seat since 2003.
