Upper Valley school notes for May 19, 2025

Secondary accomplishments

Canaan Elementary School fifth-grader Soren Lavoie won third place in the New Hampshire Drinking Water Festival, State Science Fair and Poetry Contest for his poem titled “Saving the Seasons.”

Frances C. Richmond Middle School’s quiz bowl team made the playoffs before ultimately finishing in 49th place in the 2025 Middle School National Championship Tournament, which took place earlier this month in Chicago. The Hanover middle school was the only New Hampshire team to compete in the tournament, which included 160 teams from 27 states and South Korea, according to a new release from the nonprofit organization. Alan Zhang served as captain of Richmond’s team. Members Henri Baertschiger, Josh Bagatell, Agastya Chakrabarti, Peter Holman and Lexi Thaler Wellborn all competed in the tournament under the guidance of coach Alex Lovejoy and assistant coach John Lovejoy.

Lebanon High School senior Sage Murray has been named the Lebanon School District’s May student of the month. She was nominated by three Lebanon educators, according to a news release from the district. “Sage is a beautiful writer and puts her whole heart into her assignments,” according to the release. “When she asks questions about her grade or assignments, she is asking because she wants to learn, not to argue the number.”

Claire Washburn, a 4-H dairy member from Bethel, came in first in the beginner division in the 2025 Central and Southeastern Vermont Regional Dairy Judging Tour in April. South Royalton dairy members in the division, which includes children ages 8 to 10, also competed: Lucy Angell, second; Hailey Williams, third; Conner Hoyt, fourth; Emmett Hoyt, fifth; and Emile Guerlain, sixth. Hattie Hoyt, of Tunbridge, took seventh place. Sophie Fors, of Bethel, came in first in the junior division, which includes children ages 11 to 13. Thomas Williams, of Randolph Center, came in second in the junior division, followed by Amos Riesterer, of Bethel, in third. Austin Washburn, Bethel, came in first in the senior division, which includes dairy members ages 14 to 18, while Whitney McClain, of Tunbridge, came in second.

Post-secondary graduations

Ellis Hamilton DeMars, of Norwich, earned a bachelor’s degree with distinction in political science from the University of Colorado-Boulder this spring.

Ethan Kreuzburg, of Canaan, has been inducted into Chi Alpha Sigma, the national scholar-athlete society, at Muhlenberg College in Allentown, Pa., where he is pursuing a degree in sustainability studies.

Indian River School library media and digital learning specialist Tod Guilford was selected as the Rosen Publishing Northern New England School Librarian of the Month this May. Guilford has worked at the Canaan middle school for a year, according to a news release from the Mascoma Valley Regional School District. He worked as a social studies teacher at Mascoma Valley Regional High School from 2001 to 2010. The district will receive a year subscription to a Rosen Publishing Group database and a set of print books as a result of Guilford’s honor.
