Secondary accomplishments

Lucy Angell, of South Royalton, came in first place in the beginners division during the 2025 Central and Southeastern Regional 4-H Dairy Quiz Bowl, which took place March 2 at Vermont State University in Randolph Center. The competition, which included a written exam, covered calf raising, feeds and forages, herd health, anatomy, reproduction and dairy breeds, among other topics, according to a news release from the Orange County 4-H dairy program.

Lucy, of the Middle Branch 4-H Club, took the top prize in the ages 8 to 10 division. Fellow Middle Branch member Claire Washburn, of Bethel, came in second. In the juniors category for children ages 11 to 13, Middle Branch 4-H Club members Sophie Fors, of Bethel, came in second and Thomas Williams, of Randolph Center, placed third. In the seniors category for children ages 14 to 18, Sylvia Johnson, of Tunbridge, Clever Clovers 4-H Club, placed second; Bee Wilbur, of North Hartland, Hartland Cattle Club, placed third; Austin Washburn, of Bethel, Middle Branch 4-H Club, placed fourth; Ashton Perkins, of North Pomfret, Hartland Cattle Club, placed fifth; Dani Flint, of South Royalton, Middle Branch 4-H Club, placed sixth; and Whitney McClain, of Tunbridge, Clever Clovers 4-H Club, placed seventh.

The following members of the Hartford High School Chamber Choir will attend the All Eastern Music Conference in Hartford, Conn., in April: Macy Bettwieser, Cora Winslow, Amelia Whipple, Quinn Chartier, Alexis Husband, Monet Nowlan, Maddie Moore, Scarlett Brooks, Jaxon DalPra, Tate Mosenthal, Hug Wendling, Sebastian Lorenz, Nate Flockton, Kevin Sumner, Isaac Dustin-Eichler, Arlo Philip. Additionally, Chartier was accepted into All-Eastern Treble Choir, Lorenz was accepted into All-Eastern Mixed Choir and Molly Fournier-Stephens was accepted into All-Eastern Concert Band.

Hartford Memorial Middle School First Lego League champions Douglas Kussius, Charles Zitka, Ethan Obar, Emma Iliescu and Leo Snyder-Hamalainen will attend the 2025 First Lego League International Tournament on April 16, in Houston, Texas.

Post-secondary accomplishments

Max Jovanovich, of Grantham, who attends Manchester Community College, has been named a semifinalist for the Jack Kent Cooke Foundation Undergraduate Transfer Scholarship, which provides up to $55,000 per year for up to three years for community college students to complete bachelor’s degrees at four-year educational institutions.

Emily Lewis, of White River Junction, who is studying entrepreneurship at Grove City College in Grove City, Penn., made the dean’s list with distinction for the fall 2024 semester.

Educator accomplishments

Joanna Marcotte, a computer science teacher at Mascoma Valley Regional High School, earned theNew Hampshire Affiliate Educator’s National Center for Women & Information Technology (NCWIT) Aspirations in Computing Educator Award.

Marcotte has started new computer science classes at Mascoma including Running Start Website Design, Intro to Cyber Security and Intro to Python, according to a news release from the Mascoma Valley Regional School District. She is currently starting a Girls Who Code Club and a Computer Science Honor Society.

“Ms. Marcotte has completely revolutionized the computer science education we are able to provide to students,” Mascoma High Principal Tina Fleming said in the release. “Her passion, leadership and expertise have fueled a passion for computer science in our students that has been so exciting to witness.”
