High school cross country: Moreno leads Hartford to SVL B Division title

NORTH SPRINGFIELD, Vt. — The Hartford High boys cross country team captured the Southern Vermont League B Division Championship on Friday, with the Hurricanes’ Bennett Moreno winning the 5K race at the North Springfield Dam in a time of 16 minutes, 43 seconds.
For the girls, White River Valley’s Anya Young was second (21:25) behind winner Selah Majorell of Mount St. Joseph (21:15) among 25 runners.
The Hartford boys placed four runners in the top eight, with Elliott Brooks fourth (17:59), Hugh Wendling fifth (18:09) and Scott McSherry eighth (19:16) behind Mareno. Hayden Mabey of White River Valley, which did not have enough runners for a team score, was 15th (20:32) in the field of 38 runners.
For the girls, Hartford’s Sylvia Johnson was third (23:04), followed by teammates Geneva Durgin (5th, 23:07), Maddie Carbino (7th, 24:33), Kira White (8th, 24:35) and Lyla Metheny (9th, 24:38). Madelyn Gibson of White River Valley was fifth with a time of 24:29. The Hartford girls (10 points) were the only team with enough runners for a team score.
Results: Boys — Hartford 17, Long Trail 32, Otter Valley 46, Arlington 56, Springfield 66.
WESTMINSTER, Vt. — The Woodstock High girls cross country team finished second in the Southern Vermont League A Division Cross Country Championships on Friday at Bellows Falls Union High School, while the Thetford boys and girls teams both finished third.
Thetford’s Ava Hayden was third (20:17) with Desi Broadley of Bellows Falls winning the girls 5K in a time of 19:53. In the boys 5K, the Panthers’ Brady Sloop was second (17:11) behind winner Nico Conathan-Leach of Brattleboro (16:48).
The Wasps were led by Isabell Cellini, who was eighth in the field of 65 runners with a time of 22:37. Helping Woodstock to a second-place finish were teammates Pippa Shaw (16th, 24:10) and Myra McNaughton (17th, 24:14).

In the boys race, with 78 runners, Thetford’s Wendell Durham was 16th (19:07). Woodstock’s top finisher was Nicholas Cellini (10th, 18:42).
Thetford co-coach Emily Silver said Hayden took 41 seconds off her time at the same course from earlier this season and Sloop shaved 10 seconds off his previous time.
Thetford co-coach Joe Deffner was pleased with his teams’ performances.
“A really good result that was driven by many individual PRs (personal records) and runners who stepped up and had great races,” Deffner said.
Other finishes included Lucia Carr (19th, 24:27) and Aurora Hensel-Whalen (21st, 25:42) of Thetford, Bethany Thorburn (24th) and Ruth Stallard (25th) of Woodstock. Owen Courcey of Woodstock was 26th, and Connor Gaine of Thetford finished 28th.

JERICHO, Vt. — The Hanover High boys and girls cross country teams took first place among seven teams at the Mills Riverside Invitational 5K race on Friday.
Hanover’s Lea Perreard was third (19:05) in the girls race, won by Lydia Donahue of Champlain Valley in a time of 18:39. Megan Faris (fourth, 19:09), Aria Deeb (sixth, 19:29) and Alice Bell (eighth, 19:43) were Hanover’s other top-10 finishers among 99 runners.
For the Hanover boys in the field of 131 runners, Ben Groves was fourth (17:05), Nandeesh Jain fifth (17:07), Ryan Faris eighth (17:22) and Ben Hourdequin ninth (17:23).
Hanover coach Eric Picconi said the Bears got caught in the crowded field on the narrow trail early on and had to wait to make their move.
“They used the last two miles of the race to dislodge themselves and get into the front fifth of the field,” Picconi said. “They left the race proud of the finish and grateful to share the race with such wonderful Vermont teams.”
Also finishing for Hanover boys were Alexander Valentino in 13th, Alexander Collins in 14th and Donovan Van Citters in 16th. Among the girls, Millie Larrick was 11th, Lila Muirhead was 13th and Ariella Hirschler was 16th.
Results: Boys — Hanover 34, Champlain Valley 83, Mount Mansfield 96, South Burlington 99, Burlington 112, Essex 127, Colchester 185. Girls — Hanover 32, Mount Mansfield 48, Essex 77, Mount Mansfield 91, South Burlington 130, Colchester 166, Burlington 196.
MONTPELIER — Oxbow’s Casey Wiedrick finished 22nd among 59 runners at Saturday’s NVAC Cross Country Championships. The girls race was won by Ginger Long of U-32 in a time of 19:05. U-32 was first among six teams for the girls, while St. Johnsbury defeated nine other teams in the boys competition. Oxbow did not have team scores.
Oxbow coach Katherine Chobanian said a number of her athletes were sidelined and others impacted by illness and she hopes they can return for the Vermont championships on Saturday at Thetford Academy.
