Ruel G. Barrett

Thetford, Vt. — Ruel G. Barrett (84) of Thetford, Vt. passed away on Jan. 3, 2018.

He was born to Norman and Sadie Barrett in Fairlee, Vt, Feb. 21, 1933.  As a teen he was active in the Church, an impassioned thespian, and coached little league baseball. He graduated from Bradford Academy. 

Ruel studied English and Education at the University of Vermont.   It was there he met his lifelong love, Virginia ‘Ginny’ Anderson.  They married on September 5, 1954 with friends and family in attendance. Ruel’s little league baseball team sat in the front row. The couple moved to Newport, Vt. where Ruel was as an English teacher. They would live in Newport for six years, welcoming daughters Ruth Norma Barrett (Dorain) and Barbara ‘Barbie’ Ann Barrett.

After receiving his Master’s in Education the family relocated to Thetford, Vt. where Ruel took over for Carl A. Anderson post as Thetford Academy’s headmaster.  Ruel and Ginny welcomed another daughter into the world, Susan Marie Barrett (Lozier).

His tenure oversaw a period of continued growth and harmony for the school and Vermont. Ruel championed Title IX, vigorously implementing the policy and paving the way for wider acceptance throughout Vermont.  He became a member of the Vermont Headmaster’s Association, chairing various sports and drama committees.  He helped to bring girls’ basketball tournaments to the Barre Auditorium and fostered the creation of high school drama programs throughout state. 

After retiring from education, Ruel established the Barrett Insurance Company, VT retiring in 1996. Ruel and Ginny, having survived the tragic predeceasing of their daughter Barbie, and Ruel’s siblings, sister Ruth and brother Earl, would remained strongly in love for over 63 years.  

Ruel is survived by his wife Virginia, daughters:  Ruth and husband Doug Dorain of Wilder Vt., and Susan and husband Terry Lozier of Louisiana.  His four beloved grandchildren Stephanie, Mitchell, Nicholas, and Christopher Dorain; and a great many nieces and nephews.   His sister-in-law Elizabeth ‘Betty’ Barrett of Connecticut as well as many grand nieces and nephews.
