ORFORD — The Rivendell Interstate School District will hold its annual meeting via Australian ballot next month to encourage social distancing during the coronavirus pandemic.

Absentee ballot applications will be mailed to registered voters in Rivendell’s four towns — Orford, Fairlee, West Fairlee and Vershire — next week.

People wishing to vote by mail-in ballot must fill out the application and return it to their town clerk, who will then send a ballot package.

Packages are due back to clerks by May 26, and ballots received after that date will not be counted, according to a notice on the district’s website.

The school district also will set up a polling place from 5 to 7 p.m. on May 26 at Rivendell Academy. Voters who did not request absentee ballots will be able to go through the line as normal during that time, and in-person same-day registration will also be allowed.

The School Board is planning two informational meetings on the budget and warning planned for May 5 and 19. They will be held by teleconferencing software, although the district hasn’t yet determined which platform will be used.

Rivendell is among several school districts and municipalities that postponed its annual March floor meeting to prevent the spread of COVID-19.
