Recounts set for 3 Sullivan County seats in NH House

Recounts have been scheduled on Friday by the New Hampshire Secretary of State for three New Hampshire House elections in Sullivan County.

In Sullivan 5, which comprises Springfield and Sunapee, incumbent Democrat Linda Tanner, of Sunapee, defeated Republican George Grant by 30 votes, 1,392-1,362, in the Nov. 8 election.

In Sullivan 8, where there were four candidates for two seats representing nine towns, Claremont City Councilor Jon Stone, a Republican, placed second just three votes ahead of Sunapee Republican Don Bettencourt. Hope Damon won the other seat with 4,454 votes, and Rob Lovett Jr., of Claremont, was fourth with 4,179 votes.

The new Sullivan 6 district, with Claremont and Croydon, included four incumbents and two newcomers for three seats. Incumbent Walt Stapleton, R-Claremont, bested Democrat Andrew O’Hearne, by 49 votes, 2,081-2,032, for the third seat, with incumbent Claremont Democrats John Cloutier and Gary Merchant winning reelection with 2,240 votes and 2108 votes, respectively. Claremont Republicans Sean McCarthy and Jeremy Herrell finished with 1,954 votes and 1,939 votes.

The Sullivan 8 recount is scheduled for Friday morning, with the other two early Friday afternoon.
