RANDOLPH — Voters residing in the Randolph Police District rejected a police budget of $771,000, of which $499,000 would have come from taxes, in Tuesday’s ballot voting.

The tally was 227 against to 136 for. If the budget passed, it would have re-established the town’s police department which was disbanded in 2018 when Randolph contracted with the Orange County Sheriff’s Department. The sheriff’s office stopped patrolling the town last fall due to staffing shortages.

Voters supported a proposed general fund budget of $3.69 million, of which $1.9 million is to come from taxes, and the proposed highway fund budget of $2.1 million, of which $1.76 million is to come from taxes. Both budgets were up from last year, when voters approved a $3.4 million general fund budget and a $2 million highway budget.

Voters in the Water District approved a budget of $603,000 and voters in the Sewer District approved a budget of $868,000.

With 440 votes, Ericka Grygowski won one year remaining on a three-year term on the Selectboard, beating out Mitchell G. Harrness who earned 184 votes. In uncontested races, Larry Satcowitz (two years), Trini Brassard (three years) and Stephanie Tyler (two years remaining on a three-year term) also won seats on the board.

Voters also supported granting the Randolph Senior Citizens Center a five-year property tax exemption.
