Town Meeting preview: Funding new Randolph police force before voters

Articles of note: Voters residing in the Police District will be asked to approve a budget of $771,000, of which $499,000 would come from taxes. Voters also will be asked to grant the Randolph Senior Citizens Center a five-year property tax exemption.

Contested races: Ericka Grygowski is facing off against Mitchell G. Harrness for Selectboard seat that has one year remaining on a three-year term. There also is a contest between Al Hermsen and Sam Hooper for a seat to represent Brookfield, Vt. on the Orange Southwest Unified Union School District Board.

Budgets and spending articles: The proposed general fund budget is $3.69 million, of which $1.9 million is to come from taxes, and the proposed highway fund budget is $2.1 million, of which $1.76 million is to come from taxes. Both budgets are up from those of the previous year, when voters approved a $3.4 million general fund budget and a $2.02 million highway budget. Voters in the Water District are asked to support a budget of $603,000 and voters in the Sewer District are asked to support a budget of $868,000.

Meanwhile, the proposed Orange Southwest Unified Union School District, which includes schools in Randolph, Braintree, Vt. and Brookfield, Vt., budget is $24.7 million. If approved, it is expected to result in education spending of $21,523 per equalized pupil, which is about 10% more than spending for the current year.

When, where and how to vote: Randolph, the police district, the water district and the sewer district are scheduled to hold Town Meeting voting by Australian ballot on March 7 from 7 a.m. – 7 p.m. at the town offices at 7 Summer Street.
