Thank you for your interest in and support of the Valley News. So far, we have raised 80% of the funds required to host journalists Claire Potter and Alex Driehaus for their one-year placements in the Upper Valley through Report for America, a national service program that boosts local news by harnessing community support.

Please consider donating to this effort.

In mid-April we launched a campaign to solicit contributions to support the Valley News during this unprecedented pandemic and economic collapse. The many notes of appreciation and encouragement we received from readers and supporters have been hugely inspirational. Individuals and businesses have placed ads supporting our local journalism.

“Thank you” does not say enough; you astounded us with your response. The campaign received contributions from 1,535 people totaling more than $155,000.

It’s no secret the newspaper industry was facing challenging times prior to the pandemic and we will continue to do so on the other side. The money that was raised has helped to offset a portion of the revenue losses we have sustained since mid-March, allowing us to continue on in this essential work. We will be looking at ways of garnering ongoing support as we work toward sustaining local journalism throughout the Upper Valley.

Inquiries from several media companies and trade organizations have centered on why the campaign was so successful. There is no single reason, but this much is certain: The Valley News has been built on a tradition of journalistic excellence and loyal support from readers and advertisers. The success is attributable to the dedicated people who have worked at the Valley News over the years to develop a trusted and respected news source, presented in a professional manner and delivered to thousands of our neighbors.

We should all appreciate how fortunate we are to live in such a beautiful and supportive area. If you do not already do so, we hope you will consider subscribing. Please remember to shop local and support the local business community.

Stay safe and be well.
