Lebanon’s Post 22 splits games to open Legion playoffs

NASHUA, N.H. — The Lebanon Post 22 American Legion baseball team split its first two games in the state tournament on Saturday at Holman Stadium.

Post 22 opened the double-elimination tournament with a 9-2 loss to Londonderry Post 27. Lebanon is the second seed from District A and Londonderry is District B’s third seed. The teams entered the second inning in a 2-2 tie before Post 27 scored twice more during the third and fourth frames and three times during the sixth.

Lebanon committed four errors during the contest and managed just three hits, two of them by Dom Van Leare-Nutting, with one of his strikes a triple. Post 22 starter Matt Goss allowed six hits and four runs, all earned. He walked two batters and struck out none during his two-inning stint. Relievers Freddie Mierke and Wyatt Daigle allowed just one hit each but five runs combined, two of them earned.

Lebanon pinned a 5-4 defeat on Manchester’s Sweeney Post 2 during its second tournament game. Post 22 took a 3-0 lead after three innings but found itself tied, 3-3, after four. Lebanon led, 4-3, after five frames but fell into a 4-4 deadlock during the top of the seventh.

Post 22’s at-bat in the seventh began with an Ian Hedgepeth single, and the Plymouth State student advanced to second base when Van Leare-Nutting hit a single of his own. Hedgepeth was thrown out trying to steal third base, but Zach Aldrich followed with a double to plate Van Leare-Nutting for the victory.

Van Leare-Nutting had three hits and an RBI and Aldrich had two hits and an RBI. Bennett Hewett and Dominick Puksta each contribued a hit and an RBI.

Mierke started on the mound and went three innings, allowing two hits and three runs, two of them earned. He struck out two batters and walked none. Aldrich relieved and surrendered two hits and one earned run while striking out five and walking four.

Lebanon next plays at 7 p.m. Sunday against either Portsmouth or Concord, each of which will enter their 1 p.m. game at 1-0 in the tournament. Portsmouth is District B’s second seed and Concord is top-seeded among District A teams.
