Town Meeting preview: School tuition changes before Piermont voters

Articles of note: Two articles on the school warrant relate to the town’s approach to school choice. The first, which the School Board does not support, asks whether voters support offering high school choice to Piermont students by allowing parents or guardians to pay any additional costs over the level set by the current policy. The current formula sets the maximum tuition cost Piermont will pay for high school students at the average tuition cost of Rivendell, Oxbow and Woodsville, plus 18%. That article, if approved, would require an additional $21,000 for tuition costs.
If that article fails, voters have a second option, which is supported by the School Board, that would direct the School Board to increase the current tuition policy from 18% to 27%, at a cost of an additional $15,000.
Contested races: There are no contested races.
Budgets and spending articles: The proposed municipal operating budget is $1.2 million, which is up from last year’s $1.1 million. The proposed school budget is $2.8 million, which is up from $2.3 million proposed last year.
When, where and how to vote: Piermont is scheduled to hold ballot voting on Tuesday, March 14 from 10 a.m. – 7 p.m. in the Old Church Building, 131 Route 10. The second session of the annual meeting will take place on March 18 at 10 a.m. at the Piermont Village School, 131 Route 10. The school meeting is scheduled for Tuesday, March 21 at 7 p.m. at Piermont Village School.
