SHARON, Vt. — A 60-year-old Vermont woman and her 94-year-old passenger were killed Tuesday afternoon after an SUV driven by a South Royalton man crossed the median on Interstate 89 and collided with their vehicle, according to Vermont State Police.

Gail Parent, of Northfield, Vt., was taken by helicopter to Dartmouth-Hitchcock Medical Center and later died, according to a news release from Vermont State Police. Her passenger, Victor Parent Jr., also of Northfield, died at the scene.

The driver of the Toyota Highlander SUV, Nicholas Tarr, 37, of South Royalton, suffered serious injuries and was taken to DHMC, police said.

Tarr was driving southbound near mile marker 15.8 when his SUV “crossed the grassy median” and collided “head on” with Parent’s Audi A4 as she was traveling north.  “Both vehicles sustained significant damage and were totaled,” police said. Police closed down the northbound lanes of the interstate for several hours Tuesday afternoon to respond and investigate.

The crash is under investigation. Anyone with information about the incident was asked to call the Vermont State Police Royalton barracks at 802-234-9933.
