At long last, travelers on Upper Valley roads are glimpsing signs of spring, along with the not-so-welcome sight of trash that was hidden under the snowbanks all winter. That’s why the first Saturday in May is traditionally Green Up Day, a day devoted to picking up litter on roadsides. Launched in Vermont in 1970, Green Up Day now is an institution in many New Hampshire towns as well.

The latest look at the forecast shows partly sunny skies and temperatures ranging from 43 to 69 degrees, pretty nice for being outside. Be sure to keep safety in mind: Watch out for vehicles on busy streets, wear long pants and gloves, and don’t pick up anything that could cause you harm.
