East Brookfield, Vt. — Angus R. MacAskill, 82, of East Brookfield, died Thursday, March 24, 2016, at his home.

He was born on Sept. 2, 1933, in Williamstown, Vt., the son of Donald and Stella (Morrison) Mac-Askill. He was married to Deborah Jane Gage in 1955. Angus was employed as commercial teller and bookkeeper for the Barre Trust Company which is now a branch of The Merchants Bank. He also worked as a salesman and deliveryman for Ralston Purina (Checkerboard) and as a salesman for Penn Mutual Life and Metropolitan Life Insurance Companies. He was Director of Examination for the State of Vermont Division of Banking, retiring in 1995 after 31 years of service.

He held the designation of Certified Financial Examiner and was a member of the National Society of Financial Examiners (SOFE), and Vice President of the Vermont Chapter of SOFE. He was a graduate of the Life Underwriters Training Council, National School of Savings Banks at Fairfield University, National School of State Bank Examiners at The University of Illinois, and Examination and Computer schools sponsored by the National Credit Union Administration and Federal Deposit Insurance Corporation. He served in the 172nd Infantry of the Vermont National Guard. He was a member of the Brookfield School Board, Brookfield Historical Society, and served in several capacities on the Brookfield Bicentennial Committee. He was a life member of the Canadian Club and the Barre Elks Lodge #1535, and a 56 year member of the Summit Masonic Lodge #104 F&AM and Pulaski Lodge of Wells River. He was a member of the Brookfield Men’s Club and past treasurer of the Barre Chapter of the Clan Gordon Lodge and Knights of Pytheus. He was a longtime member of the East Brookfield Community Church where he had served as a Deacon, Trustee and committee member. Angus enjoyed travelling, working with church youth groups in South Ryegate and Williamstown, and camping with family and friends.

His survivors include his sons, A. Mark MacAskill and wife, Angie, Roderic F. MacAskill and wife Kathleen, and Aaron R. MacAskill and wife, Elizabeth, and Timothy A. MacAskill; nine grandchildren; four great-granddaughters, one great-grandson. He was predeceased by his wife; sister Mary D. Moberg; brothers, Clifford, Donald, William and Kenneth MacAskill.

Memorial Services will be held at 11 a.m. Thursday, March 31 at the East Brookfield Community Church, with Rev. Joshua Drake, officiating. There are no calling hours. Burial at the Brookfield Center Cemetery will be announced at a later date. Contributions in his memory may be made to the Brookfield Historical Society, P.O.
