CHARLESTOWN — A 22-year-old Claremont woman was killed last week when her car crossed the centerline on Route 12 and collided with an oncoming truck, according to police.

The driver, Rebecca L. Higgins, was driving in a 50 mph zone on Route 12 south of the Langdon Road intersection when the crash occurred early in the afternoon on Nov. 23.

Charlestown Police Sgt. Jonathan Graham said two toddlers who were in the car suffered “non-life-threatening injuries” because they were in child-safety seats.

“They were both properly secured,” Graham said on Monday. “Had they not been they would have been in bad shape. It was a violent accident.”

Both toddlers were 2-year-old girls. One was Higgins’ daughter, the other a niece. One of the girls was treated and released that day and the other was taken to Dartmouth-Hitchcock Medical Center, he said.

Higgins’ car collided with an empty flatbed tractor trailer being driven by Daniyel Jones, of Indianapolis, Ind. Jones was not injured in the accident, and Graham said Higgins had crossed the centerline into the path of the oncoming truck.

“We’re not anticipating any charges,” he said.

Higgins, who grew up in Cheshire County and graduated from Keene High School in 2016, was the mother of two and had worked at a Dunkin’ in Keene, according to her obituary.

Calling hours will be held on Wednesday from 6-8 p.m. at Cheshire Family Funeral Chapel and Crematories in Keene. Donations to a fund for her children may be made through the Savings Bank of Walpole, the obituary said.
