NECBL: Late home run sends Martha’s Vineyard past Nighthawks

OAK BLUFFS, Mass. — Upper Valley pitcher Jordy Allard gave up a game-turning three-run home run with two outs in the bottom of the seventh inning as the Martha’s Vineyard Sharks rallied for a 5-4 NECBL defeat of the Nighthawks at Vineyard Baseball Park on Friday night.

Upper Valley (20-14) dropped its second one-run game in as many nights. Briefly tied for the NECBL’s Northern Division lead following North Adams’ loss to Ocean State, the Hawks slipped to third behind the SteepleCats and Keene, which routed Sanford, 14-4, on Friday. The Nighthawks the Swamp Bats meet on Sunday at the Maxfield Sports Complex.

Andrew Cossetti (St. Joseph’s) tied the game, 1-1, with a solo home run in the second inning before the Nighthawks built a 3-1 lead. Cole Frederick (Jacksonville State) hit a solo home run over the right-field fence in the fourth, and Jeff Costello (Northeastern) delivered an RBI double to score David Marcano (NJIT) in the fifth.

Down 4-2 in the home seve, the Sharks’ Alan Burnsed tagged Allard (Babson) for a three-run blast to regain to the lead. Anthony Quirion (Lamar) had Upper Valley’s last best chance to tie the contest, getting caught trying to score on an eighth-inning Cossetti double.

Jordan DiValerio (St. Joseph’s) is scheduled to start for Upper Valley against the Swamp Bats on Sunday.
