Newport man charged with child sex assault

NEWPORT — A 40-year-old Newport man is being held without bail on a charge that he sexually abused a minor, Newport Police said on Monday.

Timothy Wright, who was arrested on March 16, has been charged with aggravated felonious sexual assault for alleged acts of sexual assault against a child under 16-years old who was known to him, according to a news release issued by Newport police.

The charge is a special class felony carrying a maximum sentence of 10 to 20 years in state prison if convicted. Wright was arraigned in Sullivan Superior Court on Friday.

Police said the investigation is ongoing and additional charges are anticipated.
