NEWPORT — A juvenile was taken into custody for “criminal acts related to the assault and discharge” of a gun after police determined that he was involved in an assault of a man in the area of Whipple Road in Newport last Thursday.
Newport police and fire personnel responded at 10:15 p.m. on Aug. 29 to multiple 911 calls reporting an assault and shots fired, Newport Police Department reported in a news release on Tuesday morning.
Upon arrival at the scene, police found an adult male victim who had been physically assaulted and evidence that a firearm had been discharged during the course of the assault, according to police.
No one was struck by gunfire in the incident and the “suspects” in the attack left the scene prior to police arriving, police said. A subsequent investigation led police to take the juvenile into custody several days later.
Juvenile cases are confidential by law, so police said they would not be releasing further information at this time.
