Newport approves municipal budget, reelects incumbent Selectboard members

NEWPORT — In all-day balloting Tuesday, voters approved an $11.1 million budget, three-year contracts for police and public works and reelected two Selecboard incumbents.
Selectboard Chairman James Burroughs earned 468 votes, and board member Jeff Kessler, 365, and challenger Doug Ring, 263.
Voters also approved a $200,000 appropriation for paving; $200,000 to hire two, full-time firefighters/EMTs; $188,000 for a sidewalk plow and money for several different capital reserve funds.
Of the 29 articles on the warrant, only four were defeated: $10,000 for the recreation facilities capital reserve fund; $250,000 for sidewalk repairs, curbing and a retaining wall on Maple Street; $375,000 for a lease/purchase agreement for a street sweeper; and $24,000 to support the publication the Newport Town Times.
Turnout was 16%, or 622 voters, from a checklist of 4,022.
