Newport School Meeting preview

Article of note: A petitioned warrant article would urge the Legislature and governor to increase state funding for public education “to fulfill the State’s responsibility of providing an adequate education fairly funded for every student across the state.”

Contested races: Three candidates are running for two, three-year terms for the School Board: Keith Sayer, Bert Spaulding Sr. and Jessica Packard.

Budgets and spending articles: The proposed operating budget is $22.15 million, up from the budget of $22.06 million that voters rejected last year. A separate article asks whether voters support the cost of a new collective bargaining agreement with the Newport Teachers Association, including $355,000 in the current year and $208,000 next year. Another article asks whether voters support the cost of a new bargaining agreement with the support staff, which includes $163,000 for the current year and $80,000 for next year.

When, where and how to vote: Ballot voting will take place on Tuesday, March 11 from 8 a.m. to 7 p.m. in the Newport Middle/High School gym, 245 North Main Street.
