Newport — The Newport School Board voted unanimously Thursday night to hire Shannon Martin as the new principal for Newport Middle High School, Superintendent Cindy Gallagher said in a news release.

Martin, the principal of Black River Middle High School in Ludlow, Vt., since 2014, was offered an annual salary of $88,000 for the 2017-18 school year. She previously taught science at Newport High School for seven years.

Gallagher said in her release that the “board was pleased with Ms. Martin’s prior knowledge of the district and the leadership she has demonstrated in her current role.”

Gallagher said Martin will work with Suzanne Boyington, the other finalist for the position and current interim principal. Boyington will assume the position of associate principal for the middle school.

“I’m pleased that the board has approved the hiring of Ms. Martin. It is great to have her return to Newport and I believe she will make an immediate positive impact,” Gallagher said, adding that with Boyington they will be a “very strong team.”
