TILTON, N.H. — Newport High junior Maddox Lovely won three events at the NHIAA Division III state outdoor track meet, pacing the Tiger girls to a third-place finish among 23 teams on Thursday at Winnisquam Regional High School. The Newport boys finished fifth out of 26 teams, led by senior Kyle Ashley’s two first-place finishes.
Hopkinton won the girls meet, with Pelham edging out Newport for second place by one point, 45-44. Trinity was first among the boys.
Lovely won the long jump (16 feet, 7 inches), the 100-meter hurdles (15.55 seconds) and the 300 hurdles (47.49) and was third in the 100 dash. Newport also got scoring contributions from Taylor Fellows (fifth in the 800), Emma O’Connor (fourth, discus) and Callie Dixon (fifth, shot put). The top six finishers in each event receive points.
In the boys meet, Ashley won the shot put (47-4) and the javelin (190-10) and was fourth in the discus, and teammate Kamden Pollari was second in the shot put. Newport’s Aaron Fellows was second and Tyson Diapola sixth in the high jump, and the Tigers’ 4x800 relay team of Christian Forsythe, Cayden Forand, Bryce Palmer and Fellows finished sixth.
“They did incredible. Exceeded expectations,” Newport coach PJ Lovely said Friday. “We had five individual state titles, four school records and Kyle set the meet record in the javelin. Coaches are happy. It is nice to have Newport on the track map.”
Mascoma’s boys had a second-place finish in the discus and sixth in the shot put from Barnaby Diehn and a fifth place in the javelin by Colin Myers. The Royals’ Gunner Currier took second in the 3,200 meter run, and teammate Tanner Moulton was fifth in the 400. For the Mascoma girls, Georgia Kondi won the shot put (38-1) and the discus (119- 7).
Mascoma coach Rick Currier said he was pleased with the improvement of both the boys and girls teams from last year.
“We had a very strong day today,” Currier said in an email. “After finishing in the twenties for both boys and girls last year, we finished 11th in boys and 13th in girls today.”
