Woodstock — More than 594 pounds of unwanted medication were disposed of throughout Windsor County during National Prescription Drug Take-Back Day on April 28.

The collection was the largest recorded in a single day, according to a news release from Windsor County Prevention Partners.

Local nonprofits and law enforcement teamed up to collect unwanted drugs in Hartford, Norwich, Woodstock, Windsor, Springfield, Royalton, Rochester, Weathersfield, Chester and Ludlow during the national event. All together, towns in Vermont collected a total of 6,007 pounds of medication, which will be incinerated by the Federal Drug Enforcement Administration.

“We want to encourage everyone to get rid of their medications, get it out of the house,” Windsor County Sheriff Michael Chamberlain said in the news release. “The collections efforts help to keep dangerous medications out of the hands of people who struggle with substance use disorders.”
