QUECHEE — A construction worker was injured after being trapped under a street sweeper on Quechee Main Street Friday evening as crews worked on a paving project.

“A street sweeper being operated by a (Pike Industries) subcontractor backed over” an employee working for Pike Industries on the road project, Hartford Police Department Acting Patrol Commander Daniel Solomita said.

The initial call to dispatch came in at 5:41 p.m., he said. Members of the Hartford fire and police departments worked to extricate the injured man, who was transported to Dartmouth Hitchcock Medical Center in Lebanon, where Solomita said he is in critical condition.

“The injuries were substantial,” Solomita said.

The Hartford Police Department has opened an investigation into the incident. He declined to provide the names, ages, or hometowns of the victim or the person operating the street sweeper, citing the ongoing investigation.

“A charging decision has not been made, but it is still an active investigation,” Solomita said. “Criminal and/or civil charges may be filed in the future.”

The Vermont Occupational Safety and Health Administration is also conducting an investigation of the incident, a Vermont Department of Labor spokesperson said Tuesday.

When reached by phone, an employee at the Pike administrative office in Vermont in Barre said the company declined to comment at this time.
