WELLS RIVER, Vt. — Make it a grand.

Mid Vermont Christian School sophomore Hayley Goodwin crossed 1,000 points for her career in the fourth quarter of the Eagles’ 39-34 loss at Blue Mountain on Wednesday night, not that she’d prefer to be in any sort of spotlight.

“Blue Mountain stopped the game for her and did a nice job recognizing it. It was almost awkward; we didn’t know when to stop clapping,” Mid Vermont Christian coach — and proud father — Chris Goodwin said. “Hayley was happy, but she doesn’t like any sort of individual attention. She’s all about the team. It’s almost a relief; now she can move on and focus on basketball.”

Goodwin crossed the 1,000-point barrier when she grabbed her own rebound and put it back up for a field goal in the final quarter. Goodwin, who had a team-high 12 points on the night, is now averaging 19.1 points per game this season for MVCS (12-6).

The Bucks opened the game on a roll, building a 23-11 lead at halftime before the Eagles started to chip away at the lead. MVCS made it a one-point game in the final minute but couldn’t quite overcome the deficit in the end.

“We got down early and really didn’t kick into our defense until the second half,” Chris Goodwin said. “We made it a one-possession game and played much better in the second half, which is encouraging.”

Rachel Horner-Richardson added nine points for the Eagles, who shot just 9-for-21 from the free throw line. MVCS will host Rivendell on Saturday.
