Greer, S.C. — M. Jeffery Holmes, 86, passed away Saturday, Dec. 9, 2017, with his wife Barbara and family by his side.

Jeff was born April 20, 1931, to Melvin J. Holmes and Isabella B. Holmes of Spring Lake, N.J., where he was raised.

He graduated from Asbury Park High School and Lafayette College in Easton, Pa., where he was a member of the Zeta Psi fraternity. He served as a second lieutenant in the United States Army at Fort Chaffee in Arkansas after which he joined Young & Rubicam (Y&R) advertising agency in New York City in 1956. His extremely rewarding career in marketing serving clients spanned 66 years and included account management positions with FRAM Corporation and Horton Church & Goff agency in Providence before forming his first marketing firm in 1980. Given his strong work ethic along with his love and passion for marketing, he continued serving a longstanding client until this week through Holmes Marketing. He was a past member and president of the R.I. Advertising Club. Jeff and his wife were also longtime members of the Barrington Yacht Club, the University Club of Providence and the Providence Art Club.

Jeff was a tremendous sports enthusiast and diehard New England Patriots season ticket holder for over 40 years and a fierce New York Yankees fan. In addition to sports, he loved music from the Big Band era, fishing and tennis, and was a WWII history buff.

He and his wife Barbara moved to Barrington, R.I., in 1961 where they lived for 37 years while raising their three children. They enjoyed a vacation home in Eastman community in Grantham, N.H., for 12 years and lived full time for another 12 years, where he enjoyed being an instructor at the ILEAD program at Dartmouth College. In 2010 they moved to Greer to be closer to family.

While in Greer, Jeff became an avid Greenville Drive baseball fan and season ticket holder. Additionally, he was a beloved instructor of courses he developed on commercial aviation, the Big Band era and Frank Sinatra at OLLI at Furman University.

There is no doubt his greatest joy was his wife and family. He leaves behind his wife of 61 years, Barbara; his son Jeffery M. Holmes and daughter-in-law Beth of Greenville, S.C.; his daughter Pati Fehr and son-in-law Steve of Granite Bay, Calif., and his daughter Pam Holmes of Jackson, Miss. As a grandfather, “Pa” loved being with his grandchildren Ryan Fehr and his wife Nicole, Tyler Fehr, Andrew Holmes and his wife Sarah, Elizabeth Byrd and her husband Miller.

He was predeceased by his beloved grandson Jeffery Patrick Fehr.

In lieu of flowers, donations can be made to the Cystic Fibrosis Foundation or the charity of your choice.

A celebration of his life will be held Saturday, Jan. 13, 2018, at 10:30 a.m. at Thomas McAfee Funeral Home, Downtown.
