Local roundup: Mascoma, Newport, Stevens turn in strong performances at D-III state track meet

KINGSTON, N.H. — The Mascoma High outdoor track and field team broke at least two school records at Wednesday's NHIAA Division III state meet, hosted by Sanborn.

The boys' 4x800-meter relay team of Brody Albanese, Troy Loynds, Trevor Maheu and Gunner Currier, all sophomores, set a school record with a time of nine minutes, 19.45 seconds, good for eighth place. Currier also broke the school record in the 3,200 meters, with a fourth-place finish in 10:11.43.

Also for the Royals, the girls' 4x100 relay team of Ann Buffington, Alanna Cilbrith, Braelyn Stone and Jenney Lutz ran their best time of the season, finishing eighth in 56.47 seconds after being seeded 15th. Newport's team of Olivia Moody, Chloe Greenwood, Taylor Fellows and Maddox Lovely finished fifth in that race in 55.42 seconds. Stevens, represented by Bella Bovell, Ella Muenzer, Nevaeh LeBlanc and Maddy Minckler, took ninth in 56.55.

Newport's Kyle Ashley won the boys' shot put with a mark of 45 feet, 4 ¾ inches. Aaron Fellows of the Tigers finished fifth in the boys' triple jump, leaping 38 feet, 9 ¼ inches.

Alyssa Paquette of Stevens took third in the girls' discus, with a mark of 95 feet, 10 inches. The Cardinals' Hailey Knight was second in the shot put with 32 feet, 7 ½ inches. Emily Brewster of Mascoma finished fifth in that event.

Lovely also finished second in the girls' 100 and 300 hurdles, with times of 16.26 and 49.79 seconds, respectively, and she took sixth in the 200-meter dash. Taylor Fellows was sixth in the 400 meters, and Kayden LaClair finished sixth in the boys' 200.

The Newport boys' team of LaClair, Aaron Fellows, Tim Fratzell and Eric Wilkinson secured a second-place finish in the 4x400 relay with a time of 3:37.35.

WEST CANAAN — Brody Goulette and Marshall Yorke each had two hits for the Royals, who were undone by five errors to Newfound's none.

U-32 at Thetford (susp.)

THETFORD — With the Panthers leading 2-1 in the bottom of the second inning, the contest was suspended due to rain. Dempsey McGovern had driven in the tying run with a single, and Justin Robinson scored on a wild pitch to give Thetford the lead.

It has not been determined whether the game will be completed on a later date.

SOFTBALLNewfound 23, Mascoma 3

WEST CANAAN — Natalee Petersen and Alyssa Webster each drove in a run for the Royals. Abigail Waugh, Webster and Makenna Houston all saw action in the pitcher's circle.

Mascoma (0-14) has one last chance to get in the win column Friday at White Mountains.

Stevens 11, Bishop Brady 3

CONCORD — The Cardinals continued their strong recent play, winning their sixth game out of their last seven. Stevens (7-8) concludes the regular season Friday at Fall Mountain.

U-32 20, Thetford 17

THETFORD — The Panthers fell short in a slugfest against the Raiders. Thetford finished 8-6 in the regular season and awaits its seed in the VPA Division III playoffs.

Leland & Gray 15, White River Valley 13

SOUTH ROYALTON — The Wildcats put up a solid fight against a strong Rebels team but came up a bit short. WRV ended the regular season at 3-13.

BOYS LACROSSEHartford 16, St. Johnsbury 4

WHITE RIVER JUNCTION — Joseph Barwood had six goals and two assists to lead the Hurricanes, reaching a pair of milestones along the way. He passed Reece Thompson's program record of 245 career points and now sits at 249, and also scored his 200th varsity goal.

Ryan Spaulding added four goals and an assist, and Ezra Mock, Logan Caffrey, Blaine Gour, Nick Daniels, Brody Tyburski and Austin St. Peter each scored once. Caffrey, Brayden Trombly, Cavan Benjamin, St. Peter and Justin Robinson each picked up an assist.

Hartford (14-0) is at Brattleboro in Friday's regular-season finale.

Campbell 8, Lebanon 3

LEBANON — Benji Madory scored all three goals for the Raiders in the losing effort. Lebanon finished the regular season at 4-10.

Kearsarge 12, Stevens 4

NORTH SUTTON, N.H. — The Cardinals scored a season-best four goals but could not get past the Cougars. Stevens (0-12) concludes its season at home against Gilford on Thursday.

GIRLS LACROSSEWoodstock 15, Rutland 13

WOODSTOCK — The Wasps picked up a home win on Senior Night behind five goals from Claudia Shoemaker and four from Isabel Konijnenberg.

Fiona Piconi added three goals, and Gracie Laperle, Maeve Roylance and Lily Gubbins each scored once. Piconi also had two assists, and Shoemaker, Lila Beckwith, Laperle, Roylance and Gubbins had one apiece. Audrey Emery made 11 saves.

Woodstock honored seniors Emery, Konijnenberg, Gubbins and Emma Allegretti, as well as team manager Violet Tuckerman. The Wasps (5-7) host Stratton Mountain to finish the regular season on Friday.
