Local roundup: WRV baseball improves to 3-0
SPRINGFIELD, Vt. — That’s three wins in a row to open the season for the White River Valley baseball team. The Wildcats used a strong performance by pitcher Robby McShinsky to beat host Springfield, 11-3, on Tuesday.
McShinsky went the first 6 ⅔ innings for WRV, striking out nine against four walks while allowing two runs on five hits. McShinsky helped his own cause at the plate, going 3-for-5 with two RBIs and a run scored.
Wyatt Cadwell added a pair of hits, two RBIs and a run. Catcher Brayden Russ scored twice, drove in one, and called a great game behind the plate according to coach Devin Cilley. Ty Couture added a pair of hits with a run and a RBI. Jacob Benoit and Zander Clark each scored twice with Clark and Finn Bailey each driving in one.
The Wildcats will go for four in a row at Randolph on Thursday.
WHITE RIVER JUNCTION — The Hurricanes scored seven runs in the fifth inning and defeated the Yellowjackets in a high-scoring affair.
Solly Flores, Joey Beggs, Trenton Bird, Matt Hayes and Zach Johnson all had two hits for Hartford, which played error-free baseball. Evan Burke, Hayden Pascarelli and Charles Palmer had multi-hit games for Windsor.
Johnson earned the win on the mound, allowing five runs and five hits over four innings with nine strikeouts.
The Hurricanes (2-0) host St. Johnsbury on Thursday, while the Yellowjackets (0-2) welcome in Leland & Gray on the same day.

WOODSTOCK — Jackson Martin tossed all eight innings for Woodstock, allowing just three hits in a hard-luck loss.
The Wasps trailed, 1-0, heading into the bottom of the seventh inning. Nick Champine knotted things up at 1-1 with a RBI triple, scoring Aksel Oates.
The visitors then pushed across three unearned runs in the top of the eighth. Woodstock rallied in the bottom of the frame with two runs, scored by Jacob Stone and Ben Runstein. The Wasps then had the game-tying run on second base with one out, but were unable to plate the runner.
Woodstock (0-1) visits MSJ on Friday.
WEARE, N.H. — The Raiders came up short in a pitcher’s duel to open the season.
Generals starting pitcher Anthony Paulicelli struck out 11 over five innings. Lebanon counterpart Zach Aldrich went the first three innings, allowing one run while striking out two. Francis Calandrella had the lone hit for Lebanon, also reaching base twice on walks.
“Both teams played great defense. We struggled to get the bat on the ball,” Raiders coach Chauncey Wood said. “John Stark is one of the top teams in D-II and we hung with them the entire game. I’m happy with where we are at.”
The Raiders are back in action on Wednesday against ConVal in their home opener.
WEST CANAAN — The Royals jumped out to an early 7-1 lead, but the Rams stormed back to hand Mascoma a loss in its season opener. Mascoma is in action at home again Wednesday against Bishop Brady.
WELLS RIVER, Vt. — The Olympians dropped their season opener to the Bucks. Oxbow (0-1) opens the home portion of its schedule Thursday against Lyndon.
WELLS RIVER, Vt. — Hadlee Allen was 4-for-4 with a double and two stolen bases to lead a potent Oxbow attack over BMU.
The Olympians broke things open with 10 runs in the sixth inning. Allen, Faith Eastman, Mazie Bourgeois, Makenna Simmons and Noemi Rosa all had RBIs in the inning. The O’s collected 16 hits.
Rosa pitched the first six innings for the win in her first career start in the circle, striking out eight while allowing six hits. Rosa helped her own cause with a home run during the 10-run barrage in the sixth.
Oxbow hosts Lyndon on Thursday.
HILLSBORO, N.H. — The Cardinals fell to 0-4 with the loss to the Hillcats. Stevens (0-4) is at Conant on April 27.
WEST CANAAN — The Royals fell in their season opener and host Bishop Brady on Wednesday.
MILFORD, N.H. — Abe Pearson and Otto Bourne each had three goals for the Raiders (1-1).
Benji Madory added a pair of goals and an assist. Bode Price scored the other goal. Bourne and VJ Sites each had a pair of assists. Goalie James Barnett had 15 saves for the Raiders.
Lebanon hits the road on Wednesday to face Laconia.
BURLINGTON — The Hurricanes improved to 2-0 with Tuesday’s road win. Hartford plays Harwood in its home opener Friday.
GOFFSTOWN, N.H. — The Bears fell to the Grizzlies in their season opener. Hanover (0-1) is at Kennett on Friday.
LEBANON - Nolan Arado, Will Katz and Baden Schifferdecker each had 8-0 wins in singles to lead the Raiders over the Grizzlies.
Kyle Hines won the match of the day at No. 3 singles for Lebanon, 9-7 over Tyler Dianne. Finn Ericson added an 8-2 singles win.
Arado and Katz partnered for an 8-3 win in the top doubles match. Hines/Schifferdecker and Ericson/Lindsey Church-Cole also had 8-3 doubles wins.
Lebanon (2-0) hosts Kennett on Wednesday.
CONCORD — Lebanon picked up eight first-place individual finishes in a multi-team meet hosted by Merrimack Valley.
Tanner Ames and Morgan Kantor each had a pair of first-place finishes. Ames won both the discus and shot put for the Raider boys. Kantor won both the 200 and 400 meter dashes for the girls.
Isabella Hastings added a win in the 1,600-meter run for the girls. Birhanu Harriman (1,600 meters) and Thomas Wolfe (3,200 meters) each had wins in distance runs for the boys. Noah Lamontagne (pole vault), Marco Getchell (javelin) and Carson Jones (800 meters) all had second-place finishes for the Lebanon boys.
NORTH SUTTON, N.H. — The Royals won five events on the boys’ side: Garrett Giovagnoli in the discus, Logan Gilmore in the 100 meters, Gunner Currier in the 3,200, Carter Nadeau in the 400, and the 4-by-100 relay team.
For the girls, Georgia Kondi took first in the shot put and Elena Trempe won the 300 hurdles.
