Local roundup: Offensive outburst leads Hanover girls lacrosse to road win

PLAISTOW, N.H. — It was a slow start for the Hanover High girls lacrosse team, which found itself down by four goals early to Timberlane before rallying to lead by five at halftime and going on to win, 19-10.

Maggie Higgins had five goals and three assists, Emily Perra had five goals and one assist, Kali McDonnell four goals and six assists, and Maeve Lee four goals and one assist. Hannah Gardner had five saves for the undefeated Bears (4-0).

“We made a great comeback in the first half,” Hanover coach Sarah Martin said. “Really proud of the team’s composure.”

BaseballBrattleboro 15, Windsor 2

WINDSOR — The Yellowjackets managed just four hits, two by Johnny Clark, and committed five errors.

The Colonels led 3-0 after two and scored six runs in the third and six more in the fifth. Windsor (0-5) greets Otter Valley at home on Tuesday.

Conant 7, Stevens 0

JAFFREY, N.H. — The Cardinals could not muster any offense against the Orioles and slipped to a game below .500 at 2-3.

Stevens plays Monadnock at home on Monday.

Blue Mountain 10, Thetford 0

THETFORD — The Panthers’ Owen Goodrich had the only hit against the undefeated Bucks, who have outscored their opponents in every game by 10 runs or more.

White River Valley 16, Mill River 4

NORTH CLARENDON, Vt. — Brayden Russ and Robby McShinsky had three hits each to lead the Wildcats, who improved to 5-2.

McShinsky, Zander Clark and Finn Bailey each scored three runs and Russ, who pitched the last 2 2/3 innings with two strikeouts, scored twice. Ty Couture had two hits and scored twice.

Wyatt Cadwell started for WRV, going 3 2/3 innings with seven strikeouts and giving up three hits. The Wildcats host Woodstock on Saturday.

Woodstock 7, Rivendell 6

WOODSTOCK — The Wasps’ Jared Clark walked in the bottom of the seventh, stole second then came home with the winning run on an errant throw while attempting to steal third.

Woodstock had a 6-3 lead going to the top of the seventh when the Raptors plated one run on a double and RBI single, and two more with the based loaded and Woodstock attempting to pick off the runner on first. Aksel Oates had two hits and two RBIs, Ben Runstein had a hit and RBI and Nick Champine was 2-for-3 with two runs scored for Woodstock. On the mound, Jackson Martin pitched a complete game for the Wasps, striking out 11 and giving up six hits.

Woodstock (1-2) travels to White River Valley on Saturday. Rivendell (1-3) welcomes Proctor on the same day.

SoftballHartford 20, U-32 2 (6 innings)

EAST MONTPELIER, Vt. — The Hurricanes belted out 20 hits, including home runs by Logan Evans and Serenitee Martel, to go along with strong pitching by Marina Grassi, who went the distance with seven strikeouts.

Becca Keelty and Evans were 5-for-5, and Grassi, Madylyn Matheson and Miranda Rogers had three hits each.

Hartford coach Danielle Tenney said her team played solid defense with “smart and aggressive” baserunning.

“The girls dominated top to bottom of the lineup,” Tenney said. “Overall, everyone showed up to play; pitching, fielding, hitting and baserunning.”

Hartford (2-1) welcomes Windsor on Saturday. 

Stevens 15, Conant 12

JAFFREY, N.H. — The Cardinals (1-4) got their first win of the season and will play Monadnock at home on Monday.

Otter Valley 11, White River Valley 7

SOUTH ROYALTON — The Wildcats had a solid offensive effort with Mackenzie Vesper driving in two runs and Tanner Drury and Ava Patch one each.

Sadie Kinsley had two hits and scored twice, and Vanessa Crawford had two hits and scored a run. But the Wildcats could not contain the Otters at the plate with Drury surrendering 11 runs on 13 hits over six innings.

WRV (1-5) visits Poultney on Saturday.    

Windsor 20, Brattleboro 19

WINDSOR — The Yellowjackets hung on to win a wild one when Bri Barton made a stop on a sharp grounder to third and tagged out the would-be tying run to end the game.

Windsor had the early lead, up 9-0 in the second inning, and extended it with a combined nine runs in the fourth and fifth innings. But the Colonels kept chipping away, scoring five runs in the sixth and five more in the seventh to get within one.

For Windsor (3-3), Gianna Felice and Barton had three RBIs each, Mackenzie Kleefisch had three hits and two RBIs and Sydney Perry also drove in two on two hits.

Yellowjackets coach Wendy Moody said she is trying some different things defensively and looking for the right combo in the circle.

“We have some little things to clean up but with our bats and aggressiveness on the bases I'm pleased with what I am seeing as we get ready to face Hartford for a rematch Saturday night,” Moody said.

Thetford 42, Peoples 1 (5 innings)

MORRISTOWN, Vt. — The Panthers led 15-0 after one inning in a lopsided win.

Rebecca Osgood had seven hits including three home runs with 11 RBIs, and Eiea Morgan had five hits with six RBIs. Other contributors included Taylor West with six RBIs, Madi Mousley with four and Ashlyn Osgood with three.

McKayla Stanley and Paige Tremblay shared the pitching duties. 

Oxbow 15, Lake Region 6

ORLEANS, Vt. — The Olympians broke a 3-3 tie with seven runs in the third inning with Maggi Ellsworth and Brianna Gray driving in two runs each on singles and Hadlee Allen and Mazie Bourgeois also hitting run-scoring singles.

Oxbow collected 19 hits, including a three-run blast by Faith Eastman, and played errorless ball. Anastase Bourgeois, who also had an RBI, got the win in the circle, pitching four innings and allowing three runs while striking out six. Noemi Rosa threw three innings in relief.

Oxbow will travel to Enosburg Falls on Saturday.

Girls tennisWoodstock 6, Brattleboro 1

WOODSTOCK — The Wasps had dominating wins by five singles players and one doubles team.

Brooke Hecker, Hannah Watson, Sophia Nisimblat and Charlotte Nunan all won without dropping a game, while Maggie Pierce won her match 6-2, 6-2 and the doubles team of Tess Belisle and Mia Zilian won 6-2, 6-0.

Woodstock (3-0) is at Mt. St. Joseph on Saturday.
