Local roundup: Hartford baseball beats St. Johnsbury, improves to 3-0
WHITE RIVER JUNCTION – The Hartford High baseball team overcame an early three-run deficit to tie the game in the fourth inning and take the lead for good in the fifth on a two-out triple by Christian Hathorn, who later scored on a throwing error in a 7-5 victory over St. Johnsbury on Thursday.
The Hurricanes tacked on three more in the sixth with a pair of hits by Solly Flores and Joey Beggs combined with a walk and a hit batter.
Matt Hayes gave up three first-inning runs but shut down St. Johnsbury on no hits the next three innings.
Matt Cooney pitched a scoreless fifth for the win and Nate Clark pitched two innings to close it out, ending the game on fly ball after St. Johnsbury scored twice.
Hayes was 3-for-4 with two singles and two RBIs. Hartford (3-0) plays Mt. Mansfield at home on Monday.
RANDOLPH, Vt. — The Wildcats were held to just three hits in taking their first loss of the season.
Brayden Russ, Tattin Griffin and Loren Young each had a hit for WRV, with Griffin scoring twice and Young once. Wyatt Cadwell pitched 5 2/3 innings, striking out eight with no walks.
The Wildcats (3-1) travel to Oxbow on Saturday.

BRADFORD — The Olympians were no match for the Vikings and dropped to 0-2. Oxbow welcomes White River Valley on Saturday.
WINDSOR — The Yellowjackets found themselves down 4-0 after an inning but put up a pair of runs in each of the next three innings to go ahead 6-4, before the Rebels scored three in the sixth and two in the seventh for the win.
Johnny Clark had three hits for Windsor and Trevor Lagrow drove in two runs. Maison Fortin pitched 6 1/3 innings for the Yellowjackets, striking out a game-high seven.
Windsor (0-3) is home against Burr & Burton on Saturday.
WELLS RIVER, Vt. — The Panthers fell to 1-1 with the road loss to the Bucks. Thetford is at White River Valley on Tuesday.
BRADFORD — A Vikings error in the fifth led to two Oxbow runs to break a 3-3 tie and send the Olympians to their third straight win to start the season.
Oxbow scored first when a Noemi Rosa single drove in a run, and would lead 3-1 before Lyndon got two in the fourth to tie the game.
Anastase Bourgeois earned the win for Oxbow, allowing six hits and striking out eight while going the distance. Mazie Bourgeois and Rosa had two hits each for the O’s.
“Very proud of the hard work these girls put in every day,” Oxbow coach Chuck Simmons said. "It’s fun to watch. Anastase’s first game of the season in the circle and she pitched well today. She had great command.”
Oxbow (3-0) will host White River Valley on Saturday.
WINDSOR — The Yellowjackets held on for the win in a high-scoring affair, getting the final out on a foul popup catch by Bri Barton with the tying run at the plate.
Windsor went up early, but the Cosmos came back to tie in the second at 5-5. Windsor again took the lead with four runs in the sixth, including a Sydney Perry RBI, but some costly errors brought Springfield within one after six. The Yellowjackets went up by three with the big hit a Gianna Felice double in the bottom half before surrendering a run in the seventh, then closing it out.
Windsor (2-2) plays Bellows Falls at home on Tuesday.
NORWICH — The Bears kept it close and were down 6-4 after five innings in their opening game before Fall Mountain erupted for 10 runs in the sixth.
The Wildcats’ big inning came courtesy of nine walks and two errors on just two hits.
Jess Lobb went 5 1/3 innings in the circle for Hanover, striking out 10 and surrendering one hit. Abby Campfield and Lily Smith each had one hit to lead Hanover.
The Bears (0-1) are home Friday against Pelham.
RANDOLPH, Vt. — Olivia Tuller had a pair of hits, including a home run, and Sadie Kinsley also homered as the Wildcats got in the win column.
Tanner Drury had two hits and scored three runs with Tuller and Kinsley scoring twice each. Carlie Robinson was in the circle for WRV, giving up seven hits with 11 strikeouts in a complete game.
The Wildcats (1-2) visit Oxbow on Saturday.
WEST CANAAN — The Royals fought back from an 11-0 deficit after one inning to get within two before the Spartans scored three in the fourth and four in the seventh to put the game away.
Anna Sullivan and freshman Makenna Houston had three hits and two RBI each to lead Mascoma. Abigail Waugh pitched six innings, relieving starter Alyssa Webster.
Mascoma (0-3) is home against Monadnock on Monday.
WOODSTOCK – The Wasps dropped their opening game and will play Randolph at home on Thursday.
WOLFEBORO, N.H. – The Raiders dominated the Knights to remain undefeated on the season.
In singles matches, winners were Nolan Arado (8-0), Will Katz (8-3), Kyle Hines (8-4), Finn Ericson (8-0) Baden Schifferdecker (8-1) and Lindsey Church -Cole (8-1).
Lebanon went undefeated in doubles as well. Arado and Katz won 8-1, followed by Hines and Schifferdecker (8-4) and Ericson and Lucas Graham (8-1).
The Raiders (4-0) welcome Oyster River on Friday in a rematch of last year’s NHIAA Division II championship, won by the Bobcats.
RUTLAND, Vt. — Wren Parker, playing No 1 singles, got the Hurricanes’ sole win (6-2, 6-1).
Hartford (0-1) will be at home against Woodstock on Saturday.
LEBANON — Senior Aesha Soni earned the Raiders’ lone win in singles, an 8-1 victory. Soni and junior Adaa Karanwal posted an 8-3 win at No. 1 doubles, and the No. 3 doubles pairing of junior Hannah Rich and freshman Mari Utell also won 8-3.
Lebanon (1-4) is at Monadnock on Friday.
NORTH CONWAY, N.H. — Kali McDonnell had six goals and an assist and Lauren Eiler had four goals and two assists as the Bears moved to 2-0.
Maggie Higgins had three goals and three assists for Hanover, which hosts John Stark-Hillsboro-Deering (2-2) on Monday.
NORTH SUTTON, N.H. — Maddie Jewell had seven goals in the losing effort.
Also for the Raiders, Hadley Rich scored twice with an assist, Abby Ripley had a goal and assist and Lindsey Stark and Norah Burns a goal each. Drew Kantor made seven saves in the loss.
Lebanon (0-3) is off until May 1 when it welcomes Plymouth.
MEREDITH, N.H. — The Cardinals fell to 0-4 and are off until they host Gilford on May 1.
