Local roundup: Hanover boys, Thetford girls win at CVC Championships

KEENE, N.H. — The Hanover High boys track team won the Connecticut Valley Championship meet with 124 points, 10 points better than second-place Lebanon among the 14 teams competing.

The Thetford Academy girls team took first among 15 teams, edging Hanover by a point, 101-100.

Hanover’s Aiden Powell won the 110- and 300-meter hurdles, teammate Ian Solberg won the high jump and the Bears won the 4-by-800 meter relay.

Other first-place finishes included Sean Miller of Lebanon in the 800 meters, Birhanu Harriman of Lebanon in the 1,600 and 3,200, Tanner Ames of Lebanon in the shot put and discus, Kyle Ashley of Newport in the javelin, Finn Linehan of Thetford in the pole vault, Ayodele Lowe of Hartford in the long jump and Travis McAllister of Windsor in the triple jump.

Newport’s Maddox Lovely won the 200 meters and the 100- and 300-meter hurdles, and Newport won the 4-by-100 relay. Hanover freshman Lea Perreard won the 1,600 and 3,200 meters. Also finishing first were Madelyn Durkee of Thetford in the 100 meters, Charlize Brown of Thetford in the 400 meters, pole vault and long jump, Hailey Knight of Stevens in the shot put and Addie Derosier of Stevens in the javelin.

Results: Boys — Hanover 124, Lebanon 114, Keene 98, Hartford 69.5, Thetford 60, Newport 50, Windsor 33, Bellows Falls 24, Monadnock 24, Brattleboro 23.5, Sharon Academy 18 (13th). Girls: Thetford 101, Hanover 100, Kearsarge 94.5, Keene 72.5, Bellows Falls 57.5, Newport 51, Stevens 45, Lebanon 43.5, Brattleboro 30.5, Windsor 29, Sharon 19.5 (12th), Hartford 4.5 (15th).

BaseballWhite River Valley 15, Williamstown 2 (5 innings)

SOUTH ROYALTON — Ty Couture and Robby McShinsky threw a combined one-hitter and the Wildcats got contributions up and down the lineup to improve to 8-3.

Couture gave up one hit over four innings with five strikeouts against the 0-6 Blue Devils and McShinsky, who was 2-for-4 with two runs scored, pitched the final inning. Wyatt Cadwell drove in three runs on two hits and scored twice, and Donovan Craven and Tattin Griffin each had two RBI and two runs scored. Brayden Russ drove in a run and scored twice, and Finn Bailey and Jacob Benoit each had an RBI and a run scored.

Windsor 9, Rivendell 2

WINDSOR — Johnny Clark struck out 12 in six innings and had two RBIs to lead the Yellowjackets, who scored six runs in the first inning, to their first win of the season.

Trevor Lagrow also drove in two for Windsor (1-9).

Rivendell (4-6) travels to Springfield on Tuesday while Windsor welcomes Hartford on Monday.

Thetford 16, Oxbow 6 (6 innings)

BRADFORD — The Panthers plated nine runs in the fourth to break open the game.

JD Farrell went 3-for-4 with two RBIs, and Jake Gilman and Dempsey McGovern each had two hits and two RBIs to lead Thetford. Boone Fahey had three hits and scored twice. On the mound, Xander Oshoniyi pitched three innings, allowing two earned runs, and Sam Parkman went 2 2/3 with one earned run.

“We were very productive today at the plate,” Thetford coach Phil Chaput said. “We were disciplined and hit the ball well. Boone, Jake, Dempsey and JD set the tone today offensively. Xander gave us a great start and Sam came in and shut the door.”

Thetford (6-4) welcomes Randolph on Thursday, and Oxbow (1-9) is on the road against Lamoille on Monday.

SoftballWhite River Valley 8, Windsor 7

SOUTH ROYALTON — Behind by five runs, the Wildcats scored four in the fourth and three more in the fifth, then hung to win after Windsor got a run in the seventh.

Tanner Drury had a two-run double in the fourth and Isabella Ashley and Rachel Puopolo had run-scoring singles in the fifth to key the comeback for WRV.

The Yellowjackets put up a pair of runs in each of the first two innings, then added one in the third and one in the fourth. The Wildcats’ run in the bottom of the first came on a Sadie Kinsley single. Carlie Robinson went seven innings for WRV, giving up four hits and striking out seven.   

Windsor coach Wendy Moody said her team had too many mental and physical mistakes, but she did praise the defensive play of shortstop Gianna Felice and her 3-for-4 performance at the plate.

"This team is young and full of potential, so once we figure out where all the pieces to the puzzle belong, it'll be exciting," Moody said.

The Wildcats (3-9) travel to West Rutland on Tuesday, and Windsor (4-6) is on the road against Otter Valley on Monday.

Hartford 7, Burr & Burton 2

WHITE RIVER JUNCTION — Hartford’s Marina Grassi struck out 12 in a complete game win and drove in three runs against the Bulldogs (6-4).

Becca Keelty and Logan Evans also had three RBI days as Hartford improves to 7-2.

Madison Willey added a double and single with and RBI and Harper Robinson and Faith Brown singled.

Hartford travels to Fair Haven on Monday.

Stevens 8, Monadnock 5

CLAREMONT — The Cardinals won their third straight, improving to 4-7. Stevens is at Newfound on Wednesday.

Girls LacrosseHartford 18, Lamoille 0

WHITE RIVER JUNCTION — The undefeated and Vermont Division II top-ranked Hurricanes keep rolling along with another dominant win.

Hartford got goals from seven different players lead by Addison Cadwell and Audrey Rupp with five goals each. Nella Bowen scored three times, Alice Piper twice and Madison Barwood and Ella Perreault and Shannon Hadlock had a goal each.

Hartford (10-0) look to stay perfect at Stowe on Monday.

Burr & Burton 16, Woodstock 2

MANCHESTER, Vt. — Gracie Laperle and Lily Gubbins had the Wasp goals against the Bulldogs (9-1), ranked No. 2 in Vermont Division I.

Claudia Shoemaker had an assist and Audrey Emery had 13 saves for Woodstock (3-5). The Wasps host Brattleboro on Monday.

BRATTLEBORO, Vt. — The Wasps (6-4) won their third in a row and will travel to Middlebury on Monday.

Girls TennisHartford 5, Bellows Falls 2

WHITE RIVER JUNCTION — The Hurricanes won their second match in a row with victories in four singles and one doubles match.

Wren Parker (8-0), Maggie Dumont (8-2), Anthem Philip (8-7, 7-5) and Silvia Hale (8-3) won their singles matches, and Jaklyn LaFountaine and Larkyn Moodie-Hamilton were victorious in doubles (8-2).

Hartford (2-4) plays at Mount Anthony on Tuesday.

Woodstock 6, Mt. St. Joseph 0

WOODSTOCK — The Wasps easily swept their matches with Brooke Hecker (8-1, 8-0), Hannah Watson (8-0, 8-1), Chloe Masillo (8-0, 8-0), Charlotte Nunan (8-1, 8-2) and Tess Belisle (8-2, 8-2) winning in singles.

Woodstock (6-1) hosts Burr & Burton on May 22.
