Lutz powers Mascoma at season-opening track meet

SWANZEY, N.H. — With three first-place finishes, Mascoma High sophomore Jenny Lutz led the Royals’ girls track and field team to second place among seven teams at the Huskie Invitational at Monadnock High School, edging Newport by a point, 77-76. Conant won both the girls and boys meets.

The Newport boys took second among seven teams with Kyle Ashley winning the shot put, discus and javelin and Eric Wilkinson winning the 400-meter run and finishing second in the long jump. Also helping the Tigers was Tim Fratzel, who took second in the 200; Aaron Fellows, who took second in the high jump; and Gabe Howe, Aidan Couitt, Fratzel and Ashley, who were second in the 4-by-100 relay with Wilkinson, Couitt, Fratzell and Ashley second in the 4-by-400.

Lutz won the 100, 400 and triple jump. Mascoma’s Elena Trempe won the 100 meter hurdles and teammate Rhiannon Stone the long jump. Mascoma’s Emily Brewster was second in the shot put.

For the Mascoma boys, Logan Gilmore was first in the 100 meters, Gunner Currier took first in the 3,200 and third in the 1,600 and the relay team of Gilmore, Shane Loynds, Garret Giovagnoli and Carter Nadeau won the 4-by-100. Giovagnoli won the triple jump and was second in the discus.

Maddox Lovely won the 200 for the Newport girls, and Taylor Fellows won the 1,600. Lovely and Fellows teamed with Melody Heacock and Jessica McGuire to win the 4-by-100. Newport’s Skylar Nelson won the javelin and was second in the discus.

The Stevens girls finished fourth and the boys fifth. Haley Knight won the shot put for the Cardinals. Bella Bovell finished second in the 100, 200 and 400, Minah LaFarr was second in the long jump and Alyssa Paquette finished second in the triple jump and third in the discus. For the boys, Jai Ribero took second in the 100 and third in the long jump while teammate Tyler Christian was second in the shot put and javelin.

Results: Boys — Conant 123, Newport 118, Monadnock 90, Mascoma 85, Stevens 47, Hinsdale 16. Girls — Conant 107, Mascoma Valley 77, Newport 76, Stevens 69, Monadnock 61, Hinsdale 3.
