FAIRFAX, Vt. — The No. 13 seed Windsor High baseball team overcame sloppy play in the field with 13 hits and solid pitching to upset No. 4 seed BFA-Fairfax, 12-7, in the first round of the Vermont Division III playoffs.

Johnny Clark led the Yellowjackets (3-13) with four hits and two RBIs, and Lee Bevis drove in three runs on three hits. Hayden Pascarelli also had two RBIs and Trevor Lagrow added two hits. Windsor led 8-2 after three innings, then added a pair of runs each in the fourth and seventh innings. Windsor committed nine errors but held the Bullets to three hits. Clark also pitched 5 2/3 innings for the win.

Windsor will travel to play No. 5 seeded White River Valley, a 12-2 winner over Oxbow, on Friday.

White River Valley 12, Oxbow 2

SOUTH ROYALTON — The Wildcats scored six runs in the bottom of the fifth to extend their one-run lead and go on to defeat the No. 12 seed Olympians in a Vermont Division III first-round game.

Robby McShinsky gave up two runs over four innings, and Wyatt Cadwell shut down Oxbow the final two innings on one hit.

At the plate, Cadwell was 2-for-4 with three RBIs, McShinsky scored three runs with two hits and Brayden Russ was 3-for-4 with two runs scored. Tattin Griffin had a hit and two runs scored and Ty Couture had one hit.

WRV (12-5) will host No. 13 Windsor, a 12-7 winner over No 4. BFA-Fairfax, on Friday in a quarterfinal matchup.

Oxbow will graduate one senior, Chase Lund.

Thetford 14, Mill River 0 (5 innings)

THETFORD — The No. 3 seed Panthers scored 11 runs in the third inning to cruise to victory over the No. 14 seed Minutemen in the VPA Division III first round.

Justin Robinson hit a grand slam, Tommy Amber drove in three runs and Nolan Pepe reached base three times on two walks and a double. Xander Oshoniyi pitched the first four innings, allowing three hits and just one walk with four strikeouts. JD Farrell struck out three in his lone inning of work.

"We stayed patient at the plate. Xander pitched pretty effectively and kept them off balance. Everybody seemed like they got a hit," Thetford coach Phil Chaput said. "The last few years our first-round games have been very close, (so) this is nice."

The Panthers (10-6) will host either No. 6 Bellows Falls or No. 11 Springfield in the quarterfinals on Friday.

Rivendell 7, Danville 4

ORFORD — Will Knowles struck out 10 in 6 2/3 innings, Josh Gould had two hits, including a two-run home run, and Zach Parker also drove in a pair of runs on three hits to lead the No. 8 Raptors past the No. 9 Bears (4-11) in the Vermont Division IV first round.

Rivendell (7-8) scored four in the first on consecutive singles by five players. In the third, Harry Molesworth ran down a fly in deep left center and doubled off the Bears’ leadoff man on second.

Luke Avery had two hits and an RBI for Rivendell, and Braydan Larson also had two hits. Larson also registered the last out on the mound.   

“These guys battled against a very good Danville team. Knowles mixed his pitches well and when he needed it, he got some defensive plays behind him,” Rivendell coach Eric Reichert said. “Molesworth's play in center was a gem and stopped any momentum that Danville had after a leadoff double and the heart of the order coming up.”

Rivendell travels to Blue Mountain on Friday to play the No. 1 seed Bucks (15-1) in the quarterfinals.

Hartford 4, Harwood 0

WHITE RIVER JUNCTION — Matt Hayes pitched six innings of one-hit ball to lead the No. 5 seed Hurricanes past the No. 12 seed Highlanders in the VPA Division II first round.

Hartford (10-5) travels to fourth-seeded Peoples, the two-time defending champion in Division III, for the quarterfinals on Friday.

SoftballWindsor 10, Mill River 1

WINDSOR — The “Fresh Express” delivered for the No. 8 seed Yellowjackets against the No. 9 seeded Minutemen (7-9) in the first round of the Vermont Division III playoffs.

Freshman pitcher Molly Burke, who had eight strikeouts, teamed up with freshman catcher Cassie Clark in the win.

“We affectionately call our freshmen pitcher-catcher combo the ‘fresh express" and they kept us rolling today,” Windsor coach Wendy Moody said.  “It's easy to overlook that they are ninth graders because they handle the pressures on their positions with such poise.”

Mackenzie Kleefisch and Gianna Felice each drove in a run and Windsor (6-11) stole eight bases on the day.

“Our (seed) doesn't show how good this team really is, and when they play with confidence in themselves we can do fun things,” Moody said.

Windsor visits No. 1 seeded Oxbow (16-0) on Friday in the quarterfinals.

Fair Haven 19, Woodstock 10

FAIR HAVEN, Vt. — The No. 10 seed Wasps’ season came to an end in the VPA Division III first round at the hands of the No. 7 seed Slaters.

Eighth-grader Michaela Gibson had three hits and junior Laura Hendee had two. Woodstock finished with a record of 4-9 and will graduate Jordan Allard and Dillon Moss.

Vergennes 10, White River Valley 4

VERGENNES, Vt. — Tanner Drury was 3-for-3 and Sadie Kinsley 2-for-3 with a double, but the No. 11 seed Wildcats fell short to the sixth-seeded Commodores in the first round of the VPA Division III playoffs.

WRV finished 3-14 and lose seniors Carleigh Robinson, Liyah Fisk Turkvan and Rachel Puopolo to graduation.

Girls LacrosseWoodstock 15, Lyndon Institute 0

WOODSTOCK — The No. 5 seeded Wasps (7-7) got goals from 10 different players in their Vermont Division II first-round win.

Claudia Shoemaker and Kassidy Haley had two goals and two assists each, and Maeve Roylance and Aleks Cirovic added two goals and one assist each. Gracie Laperle scored twice and Fiona Piconi, Isabel Konijnenberg, Lily Gubbins, Hannah Gubbins and Anna Fink each scored one goal.

Audrey Emery was in net for the first half against Lyndon (0-10) and Jess Baumann was in net for the second half with one save.

Woodstock travels to St. Johnsbury on Friday to take on the No. 4 seed in the quarterfinals.

Pelham 15, Lebanon 8

PELHAM, N.H. — Maddie Jewell had five goals as the No. 10 seeded Raiders lost to the No. 7 seeded Pythons (9-5) in the first round of the NHIAA Division III playoffs.

Delaney Deshane scored twice, Norah Burns once and Drew Kantor had 13 saves for Lebanon.

“Overall, it was a hard-fought game and we had trouble getting the ball in the net,” Lebanon coach Sara Ecker said. “Defense was solid throughout.”

Lebanon finishes at 5-10 and will graduate Deshane, Amanda Brooker and Kiley Benson.

Girls TennisDover 8, Hanover 1

DOVER, N.H. — Emilia Torresani at No. 5 singles managed the only win for the third-seeded Bears against the No. 2 seeded Green Wave in the NHIAA Division I semifinals.

“We played well, but Dover came ready to get a victory,” Hanover coach Liz Murray said. “It was a great run and we are proud of the girls. Thanks to the coaches and players at Dover for their hospitality and great sportsmanship.”

Hanover finishes the year at 12-3.
