ENFIELD — An unexpected repair to its chair lift combined with a run of above-freezing level is leading the Whaleback ski area to call an early end to its season.

Whaleback announced on Thursday afternoon a decision to wrap the season on Sunday. The decision accelerated once the nonprofit ski area learned that bearings in the top bull wheel of its mountaintop chairlift terminal needed replacing, something would take time to complete.

“We have begun the work to replace the bearings, but based on the weather forecast and timeline for completion of the repairs, we have made the difficult decision” to end on Sunday, Whaleback said in an email. “We agree this is super frustrating.”

Whaleback plans to be open 1-8 p.m. on Friday and 9 a.m.-4 p.m. on Saturday and Sunday.
