WHITE RIVER JUNCTION — Tighe Hrabchak’s first name is pronounced “Tie,” but the junior made sure his Hartford High’s boys soccer team did anything but draw with Woodstock on Wednesday.

The forward notched a hat trick during the second half of the VPA Division II contest, powering the Hurricanes to a 3-1 victory at the Alumni Athletic Complex.

“We played a decent first half, but we weren’t as threatening as we should have been,” said first-year Hartford coach Connor Brooks, a former Hurricane player. “We were a little slow on the ball and kept trying to force it down the middle.

“In the second half, we used the width much better and moved the ball more quickly to generate more high-quality chances.”

The hosts, who had lost their previous two games, improved to 5-4-2 and are 16-6-3 the past two seasons. The Wasps, who had won their last two matches, fell to 5-4-0.

Hrabchak began his onslaught eight minutes after halftime with a left-footed shot from just outside the penalty area. He scored again 10 minutes later from a sharp angle on a shot that struck Woodstock’s goalkeeper before deflecting into the net.

“We talked at halftime about getting the ball on (net) because it was wet and hard for the keepers to handle,” Brooks said.

Hrabchak tallied once more, this time with three minutes remaining and out of a goalmouth scramble. Ezra Lockhart saved Woodstock from a shutout by scoring a minute later.
