Upper Valley athletes qualify for states at UVAC meet

WHITE RIVER JUNCTION — The Hanover High swim team added two more state meet qualifiers at Tuesday’s meet at the Upper Valley Aquatic Center.

Hanover coach Trent Staats said Ellia Molina (50-yard freestyle) and Gael Popescu (100-year breaststroke) both qualified for the NHIAA Division II state championship next month at UNH.

Stevens sophomore Emilee Hall also had a qualifying time in the 50 free, finishing fourth. Teammate Sara Gaspard had already qualified.

“We’ve dedicated more time to working on technical aspects like starts and turns, and it proved a big help,” Staats said about the two new qualifiers.

Hanover senior Elizabeth Staats continues to have a strong year, winning the 100-yard backstroke and the 200-yard individual medley. She was also on the winning 200-yard medley relay with Sofia Ye, Iris Freeman and Claire Uiterwyk. Freeman won the 200-yard free, with Hailey Belardo of Lebanon second. They were also 1-2 in the 500-yard freestyle. Belardo has also qualified for the state meet.

Uiterwyk won the 50-free with Ye second and Stevens’ Gaspard and Hall in third and fourth. Ye won the 100-yard breaststroke, Andre Prince of Mascoma the 100-yard free, Alex Chen of Hanover the 50 free (with Prince second) and Ruby Lintner of Hanover the 100 free. The Stevens 200 free relay team of Gaspard, Hall, Aubree Herzog and Raegyn Brothers finished first.
