Hanover sweeps Early Bird invitational

The Hanover Bears won both the boys and girls meets at the Early Bird Cross Country Invitational at Gunstock Mountain while Mascoma’s Gunner Currier won the boys race with 119 runners.

Currier, whose Royals were second in the boys’ meet among 13 team scores, crossed in 17:23 followed by Andrew Valentino of Hanover (17:51). Other top finishes for Hanover were Ben Groves (5th), Nandeesh Jain (6th), Ryan Faris (7th), Ben Hourdequin (10th) and Issac McNaughton (11ith). For Mascoma, Carl Russell was 12th and Trevor Maheu, 13th.

Hanover’s Aria Deeb was second in the girls race (21:42), with 87 runners, behind winner Maria Tilley of Gilford (21:20). Alice Bell (4th), Mary Westrich (6th), Ari Hirschler (8th) and Iris Freeman (12th) were Hanover’s other top finishers. Emma Colburn was 37th for Mascoma, which did not have a team score.

Results: Boys — Hanover 30, Mascoma 59, Portsmouth Christian 94, Kingswood 148, Gilford 175. Girls — Hanover 29, Gilford 45, Newfound Regional, 62, Prospect Mountain 104, Belmont 115

Hartford’s Moreno
wins at Bellows Falls race

Hartford’s Bennett Moreno outdueled Thetford Academy’s Brady Sloop by six seconds to win the six-team cross country race at Bellows Falls Union High School while Thetford’s Ava Hayden was second in the girls race.

Moreno finished the 5,000 meter race with 55 runners on Tuesday in 17:14, followed by Sloop (17:20.) Also for Hartford were Hugh Wendling (17th) and Elliot Brooks (18th). For Thetford, Wendell Durham was 10th and Miguel Kutter-Walker was 19th.

With 42 runners in the girls 5,000 meter race, Hayden had a time of 21:27, behind winner Bellows Falls’ Desi Broadley (20:53.) Also for Hartford were Slyvia Johnson (10th), Geneva Durgin (11th), Kathryn Summarsell (19th) and Lyla Metheny (20th). For Thetford, Maddie Pleuch was 17th and Ella Harvey finished 18th.

Results: Boys — Burr and Burton 39, Brattleboro 56, Thetford Academy 76, Hartford 90. Girls — Burr and Burton 25, Thetford Academy 72, Hartford 73.

Highlights: Woodstock traveled to Brattleboro for their first game of the season. The ball moved through the midfield and stayed in the Woodstock offensive half of the field through most of the game, but couldn’t find the back of the net. Brattleboro played a strong defensive game. Woodstock had 8 penalty corners and kept Brattleboro without any corners throughout the game. Woodstock goalie Paige Stone had 1 save for the game, Brattleboro goalie Ericka Fletcher had 8 saves in regulation. The game was 0-0 at the end of regulation, moving into a 7v7 overtime. In her first varsity game as a freshman, Betta Cirovic broke the score with 1:11 left in overtime.
