WOODSTOCK — The Woodstock High field hockey team edged Windsor, 2-1, on Friday, holding on despite being whistled for consecutive yellow cards during the fourth quarter.
The Wasps, who were down a player for seven minutes because of the violations, improved to 4-1-0, while the Yellowjackets dropped to 3-3-0.
Woodstock’s cards came because of repeated violations of the rule requiring defenders to be at least five yards away from the ball during an opponent’s free hit. First came warnings, then a two-minute penalty call and then a five-minute penalty call.
“We were warned before the season that (referees) would be calling it tighter, and apparently they are,” said Woodstock coach Leanne Tapley, whose team is the defending VPA Division II champions. “My blood pressure was definitely high, because seven minutes to burn being a man down is a lot.”
Woodstock opened the scoring during the third minute. Claudia Shoemaker’s hard cross from the left side zipped past the feet of Windsor goalkeeper Sydney Perry and to Marley Olmstead, who tapped the ball into the open net.
The Wasps doubled their lead three minutes before halftime and during a sequence that followed a penalty corner insert by Shoemaker. The ball was passed back to Shoemaker along the end line and she again swatted it across the crease, this time to Stella Carpuso at the unguarded far post.
Windsor rallied 12 minutes after halftime, Gianna Felice firing the ball home from the middle of the penalty arc and off a Mackenzie Kleefisch pass. Perry, despite some early struggles, was magnificent in making nine saves, several from point-blank range during the second half.
