RUTLAND — The Woodstock High field hockey team took another step toward defense of last season’s VPA Division II state title on Wednesday with a 4-0 defeat of Rutland in the rain.

Hannah Gubbins scored twice during the second quarter to give the visitors a 3-0 lead. Claudia Shoemaker’s goal off a Grace Laperle pass opened the scoring not long before Gubbins’ double strike. Marley Olmstead tallied with a Gubbins assist during the final quarter.

Rutland goaltender Emma Cosgrove made 13 saves while facing 23 penalty corners. Her counterpart, Paige Stone, earned the shutout with three saves. The Wasps (2-1-0) visit Fair Haven on Sept. 21.

Mascoma 3, White Mountains 0

WEST CANAAN — Ann Buffington and Makenna Houston each posted a goal and an assist as the Royals improved to 4-1-0. Bryanna Thurston also scored.

Gabby Pierce stopped four shots to drop White Mountains to 2-3-0 and earn her third shutout for Mascoma, which visits Gilford (3-1) on Friday.

Windsor 9, Springfield 1

WINDSOR — Mackenzie Kleefisch had three goals and two assists, Gabby Gilbert added two goals and Gianna Felice and Gwen Ambrose each had a goal and an assist for the Yellowjackets (2-1-0).

Amber Simonds and Piper Vivian also scored and Audrey McFarland and Hannah Tenney each had two assists for Windsor, which host Otter Valley on Saturday morning.

NORTH CLARENDON, Vt. — Ainsley Smith had three goals, Makenzie Pearl had two and the Olympians moved to 2-2.

Maggi Ellsworth also scored and Netty Morse had an assist for Oxbow, which hosts Missisquoi on Saturday.

Mount Anthony 5, Woodstock 4

WOODSTOCK — The Patriots’ winning goal caromed into the net off a Woodstock player, putting a damper on the Wasps’ season opener. Mount Anthony is 2-2-0.

The hosts trailed, 4-1, after twice surrendering goals on direct kicks. Chloe Masillo scored twice and Olivia Grasso and Hannah Watson also scored for Woodstock, which received strong play from goalkeeper Jane Stout. The Wasps visits Windsor on Friday.
