Stevens advances to semifinals

The no. 14 seeded Stevens Cardinals continued their unlikely run through NHIAA Division III basketball playoffs on Saturday.

The Cardinals defeated no. 6 Prospect Mountain, 26-20, three days after beating the no. 3 seed, Newport Tigers, 36-27.

Stevens will look for a third upset against the no. 2 seed Fall Mountain Wildcats in Tuesday’s semifinal at Sanborn Regional High School. Fall Mountain defeated seventh-seeded White Mountains, 59-35.

In the regular season, Fall Mountain (17-1) beat Stevens (8-10) by 17 points on Jan. 10 and by 8 points on Jan 28.

Boys Basketball

Hartford 68, Otter Valley 55

Key players: Hartford — Rex Banning (14 points); Joey Gardner (11 points); Noah Danieli and Ryan Murphy (10 points each) Otter Valley — Connor Dennis (24 points)

Highlights: Hartford led 23-17 at halftime.

Coach’s quote: “A pretty incredible regular season for the kids finishing 17-3 and we will be the 2 seed when the playoff brackets are announced Monday. Tonight, we worked hard flying all over the court. Now the important games begin.” — Hartford’s Mike Gaudette

Hanover 38, Milford 32

Key players: Hanover — Beckett Sobel, Wyatt Daigle. Jack Lobb Milford — Tyler Constable

Highlights: Hanover won on a Sobel buzzer-beater over a tough Milford team. Sobel finished with a game-high 13 points. Daigle added 12 points and Lobb scored 5 points off the bench, including a huge 3-pointer. Hanover had a 10 point lead at the half, and a six point lead entering the 4th, when Milford started clawing back. Tyler Constable led the Spartans with 9 points, including two huge 3s to help them take the lead.

Records: Hanover 15-2; Milford 5-11

Lebanon 48, John Stark 46

Key players: Lebanon — Liam Sullivan (13 points, 11 rebounds) John Stark — Hayden Pond (16 points); Avery Grolljahn (12 points)

Highlights: Lebanon hit 3 three-pointers (Ian George had 2, Nate Crane 1) and scored 20 points in the second quarter. John Stark played a tough zone defense in the second half and took the lead in the fourth. The victory was sealed by solid defense two foul shots from Myles Nolan.

Springfield 65, Rivendell 64 (OT)

Key players: Rivendell — Nolan Bourn (23 points, 9 rebounds, 7 assists); Josh Douglas (14 points); Kaydin Gilman (8 rebounds, 2 steals)

Highlights: Springfield beat Rivendell in overtime 65-64 in a spirited senior game Friday night in Orford. Springfield jumped to a 10 point first quarter lead that they extended to 12 by halftime. The Raptors still trailed by 11 as the fourth quarter began and they stepped up their defensive effort, holding Springfield to 3 points in the fourth. Two late 3 pointers from Bourn and steady defense from Wyatt Parker and Evan Woodward forced the game into overtime. Rivendell graduates two seniors, Kaydin Gilman (4 points, 8 rebounds) and Christian Ditcheos (3 points, 3 assists).

Boys Hockey

Hanover 4, Manchester 3 (OT)

Key players: Hanover — Will Hopkins (game-winning overtime goal); Henry Cotter (1 goal); Gavin Nartowicz (2 goals, 1 assist); Ryder Wilson (2 assists); Logan Smith (1 assist)

Highlights: Hopkins buried a hard snap shot in OT to give Bears an emotional, dramatic win on Senior Night. Trailing 2-1 after two periods, Cotter and Nartowicz scored to put Bears up 3-2. Manchester scored with less than a minute remaining in 3rd to force OT and set up Hopkins heroics.

Coach’s quote: “Very proud of the boys. They found a way to win pushing through sickness and injuries to pick up the W. All four goals came from seniors who were determined to win on senior night.” — Hanover’s Dick Dodds

Key players: Hanover — Sid Makofsky (1st career goal and 1 assist); Ryder Wilson (2 goals, 2 assists); Jake Rotchford and Gavin Nartowicz (1 goal each); Ryan Carroll (2 assists); Henry Cotter (1 goal, 4 assists); Jo Jo Drent (21 saves); Liam McConnell (2 saves)

Highlights: Solid road victory with goals spread throughout lineup. Three power play goals and one shorthanded goal highlighted the Bears scoring. A four-goal explosion in 2nd period was the difference.

Girls Hockey

Woburn (Mass.) 3, Hanover 1

Key players: Hanover — Eleanor Edson (13 saves); Katharine Moseley (1 goal); Rachel Rockmore (1 assist)

Highlights: Woburn scored with 1:09 left in the first off a centering pass from behind the goal line that deflected off or defenseman into the net. They added one in the 2nd and a power play goal in the third before Moseley scored off a Rockmore pass to make it 3-1.
