QUECHEE — After a slow start, the Mid Vermont Christian School boys basketball team slowly pulled away in the second half on Friday night to take a 49-31 win over Sharon Academy.
Sophomore Abel Goodwin had 17 points, junior Roman Goeppner posted a double-double of 10 points with 22 rebounds, and freshmen Carson Meloon and junior Joel Roberts, who hit three three-pointers on the night, had 9 points each.
“Our offense went a bit slow at first (seven points in the first quarter), but good ball movement and rebounding helped us grease the gears,” said MVC coach Erva Barnes. “Sharon kept the game close in the first half, but we took an early lead and pretty much never looked back.”
MVCS (3-2) is at Grace Christian on Wednesday. Sharon (0-5) visits Proctor on Tuesday.
Mascoma 49, Belmont 40BELMONT, N.H. — The Royals built a 23-11 halftime lead, then held off a Belmont comeback bid in the second half.
Senior Ben Seiler had 15 points and sophomore James Thomas nine for Mascoma.
Mascoma (4-2) is home to Newfound on Monday.
Thetford 59, Randolph 51 RANDOLPH — Junior Jacob Gilman led the Panthers with 21 points, including three three-pointers.
Down by two after one quarter, Thetford built a four-point halftime lead and increased it to nine after three quarters.
Freshman Dillon Vance had 15 points and sophomore Mitchell Parkman 11 to pace the Panthers.
Thetford (2-4) are at Hazen on Wednesday.
Girls basketballNewport 47, Hillsboro-Deering 40 NEWPORT — A trio of freshmen led the Tigers to the win with, Taylor Fellows scoring 19 points.
The other two first-years, Skylar Nelson and Maddox Lovely, had 12 and 10 points, respectively.
Newport got out to a 20-10 first-quarter lead and led the rest of the way. Hillsboro-Deering did provide a scare, getting within four in the second half.
Newport (2-3) travels to Kearsarge on Monday.
Alpine skiing Hanover boys first, girls second NORTH CONWAY, N.H. — The Hanover boys edged out Kennett at Friday’s alpine ski meet while the girls were narrowly beaten by the host Eagles in a pair of giant slaloms at Mount Cranmore.
Scoring for the Hanover boys were Camden Dwyer (first), Wesley Stocken (third), Andrew McGuire (fifth) and Zane Schiffman (seventh) as Hanover outpointed Kennett, 388-383. HHS won the afternoon contest as well, 391-378, with Dwyer first overall, McGuire third, Schiffman fourth and Stocken fifth. Dwyer had the two fastest times of the day, 57.88 seconds for two runs in the morning and 57.62 in the afternoon. Kingswood was third in both races.
Kennett swept the girls races, 389-382 and 388-384. Grace Lewandoski was fourth overall to lead Hanover in the morning race followed by Sadie Ross (fifth) Sadie Higgins (sixth) and Mia Madden (seventh). Lewandoski was again Hanover’s afternoon leader in third place, followed by Higgins (fourth), Riley McGuire (sixth) and Madden (seventh).
