Kleen Laundry Closing West Lebanon Store

West Lebanon— Kleen Laundry is closing its West Lebanon location, effective today, the company confirmed on Thursday.

The long-rumored closing of the store in Kmart Plaza on Route 12A near the Interstate 89 on-ramp is the result of uncertainty over the future of the site, Kleen co-owner Ned Hazard said via email.

“While there were some discussions regarding renewing the lease there, we were not able to justify investments there without knowing the status of the location,” Hazard said.

Kleen’s multiyear lease at plaza expired last fall, and since then it has been operating on a month-to-month basis at the location, Hazard said.

Kmart Plaza was acquired by Boston-based real estate developer Davis Cos. as part of its purchase of three Lebanon shopping centers in 2017. Irving Oil, which owns the adjacent vacant Irving gas station parcel, has long been said to be interested in the Kleen laundry site to build a new gas station/convenience store, although no plans have been submitted to Lebanon’s planning authorities.

Hazard called West Lebanon “a good area” and said Kleen “will be looking at alternative locations,” but he said he could not provide a timeline for when that might happen.

Kleen said customers would be able to retrieve dry cleaning after today at Kleen’s dry cleaning store on Mechanic Street in Lebanon.

Kleen closed its Mechanic Street laundromat this past summer after the City of Lebanon shut off its water because the company was nearly $7,000 in arrears on its water and sewer bill, according to the city. And Kleen closed its Pleasant Street location in Claremont in 2017.

The company now has remaining dry cleaning drop-off and pickup locations at Mechanic Street in Lebanon, Lebanon Street in Hanover and Washington Street in Claremont.

Hazard said Kleen anticipates becoming current on its water and sewer bill with the city “soon” for its Mechanic Street laundromat and is “presently evaluating” whether to reopen it or not.

“Kleen does not anticipate closing any other locations at this point,” Hazard said.

The company operates a dry cleaning and laundry plant on Foundry Street in Lebanon.
