NEWPORT — One of three teenagers charged in shooting and attempting to rob a man in the parking lot of Walmart in Claremont in October pleaded guilty and was sentenced this week to two years in Sullivan County House of Corrections.
Emil Ortiz, 18, of Keene, N.H., was sentenced to two consecutive 12-month terms after pleading guilty to felony charges of conspiracy robbery and reckless conduct in Sullivan County Superior Court on Feb. 6, according to New Hampshire state court records.
Ortiz was additionally sentenced to 3½ years to 7 years in New Hampshire State Prison, all suspended for 10 years, which would be served following the county jail sentence if he does not comply with conditions.
The charges stem from an October 2022 incident in which the three teenagers allegedly drove from Keene to Claremont to rob a 19-year-old man of marijuana and money as he was in a parked car in the Walmart lot. When the man fought back, the gun of one of the assailants discharged, wounding the victim in the leg before the group sped off and were caught by police a few miles away on Charlestown Road, according to prosecutors.
Ortiz told investigators that the group drove to Claremont to “do something stupid to make money” and that when they arrived at the victim’s car he and the other alleged assailants got out and surrounded the car. One of the trio approached the passenger door, opened it and shot the victim.
