NORTH HAVERHILL — A jury was deadlocked in determining whether the son and daughter-in-law of the co-founder of Project VetCare received stolen property from the organization.
The jury was hung on all but one count that Alexander Donahue, 27, and Sarah Healy Donahue, 28, faced in Grafton Superior Court, Assistant Grafton County Attorney Jack Bell said via email on Friday.
However, it found Alexander Donahue not guilty of an indictment alleging theft in concert with Danielle Goodwin, his mother, who founded the organization intended to help Upper Valley veterans, Bell said.
A verdict in the case was expected on Friday, but the case spilled into Monday.
It’s unclear where the case will go from here. Repeated messages left for Grafton County Attorney Marcie Hornick weren’t returned.
The state accused Goodwin, 48, of Hanover, of writing checks out of Project VetCare’s account to the Donahues, of North Carolina, who cashed them, according to the indictments.
Alexander Donahue faced three felonies: two counts of theft by unauthorized taking and one count of receiving stolen property. Sarah Healy Donahue faced two counts: theft by unauthorized taking and receiving stolen property. The husband and wife had a joint trial over the course of five days.
In August 2018, Goodwin pleaded guilty to stealing from the organization and was sentenced to 3½ to seven years in prison.
