BURLINGTON — A New Hampshire doctor who ran a chain of now-shuttered addiction treatment clinics in the Twin States, including one in Grantham, pleaded guilty to conspiring to unlawfully distribute drugs in federal court in Burlington on Monday.

Adnan Khan, 48, of Grantham, conspired with others to illegally distribute controlled through his business, New England Medicine and Counseling Associates, which operated treatment clinics for clients suffering from drug addiction.

Khan and a co-conspirator prescribed drugs to NEMCA patients despite knowing they were diverting the prescriptions to other users. Khan admitted that the scheme demanded upfront cash payments for purported office visits to receive drugs and he falsified medical records to justify the illegal prescribing practices, according to a news release from the U.S. Attorney’s Office in Vermont on Monday.

A sentencing date has not yet been set.

Khan’s case is the first joint prosecution of a doctor by the Justice Department’s New England Strike Force, which was formed in 2022, and U.S. Attorney’s Office for the District of Vermont, according to Vermont federal prosecutors.
