NORTH HAVERHILL — A Grafton County prosecutor was arrested and charged with violating a temporary protective order issued against him, and has been placed on administrative leave from his job.

On Tuesday, Michael Schauer, 40, of Piermont, pleaded not guilty to violating a temporary domestic violence protective order that had been issued against him in Haverhill Family Court. Schauer was arrested by Piermont police on a domestic related offense on Friday, according to court records.

Schauer allegedly attempted to contact the protected party multiple times via text three days later on Monday morning, in violation of the protective order, the court documents said.

“Pursuant to protocol,” Schauer “has been placed on administrative leave,” New Hampshire State Police said in a news release issued on Wednesday.

Grafton County Attorney Marcie Hornick, who leads the prosecutor’s office, declined to comment on Wednesday, saying it involved both personnel and ongoing criminal matters.

Schauer has been an assistant county attorney in the Grafton County State Attorney’s office in North Haverhill since 2023, prosecuting a variety of felony and misdemeanor offenses, including obtaining a reckless conduct and resisting arrest conviction earlier this year against a Wells River man who led Lebanon police on a vehicle chase through the city.

Schauer, who was taken into custody by New Hampshire State Police and transported for detention to Coos County House of Corrections, was subsequently released on personal recognizance bail. His next court date is Dec. 11 in Haverhill District Court, according to court documents.
